Deputy Director of Organizing & Campaigns
Restaurant Opportunities Centers United

Based in New York City, NY

Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC-United) is a national restaurant workers' organization that conducts advocacy, organizing, research, and policy work on behalf of restaurant workers nationwide. ROC United is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to the needs of the nation's 10 million restaurant workers.

The Deputy Director of Organizing & Campaigns will be responsible for growing the base of restaurant workers that is joining ROC, mobilizing for One Fair Wage, and moving up leadership ladders through the process. The Deputy Director will oversee five Regional Directors, each of which oversee ROC chapters and ROC stars (emerging ROC chapters) in their region that are each responsible for meeting metrics with regard to worker recruitment, mobilization, and leadership development, and each of which has varying grant deliverables with regard to job training, workplace justice campaigns, conducting research surveys and more – all of which are tools that should help local chapters and stars meet their worker organizing and mobilizing metrics. Specifically, the Deputy Director would be responsible for:

  1. supervising and supporting Regional Directors to ensure that the ROC chapters and stars under them are meeting their worker organizing, mobilizing and leadership development metrics, and also achieving their grant deliverables in a way that helps them meet their worker organizing, mobilizing and leadership development metrics – using ROC’s workforce development, legal, and research programs as tools to accomplish these metrics;
  2. overseeing training and development for organizers nationwide around worker outreach, mobilization, and leadership development
  3. ensuring that a significant number of restaurant workers are mobilizing visibly for One Fair Wage in monthly actions, quarterly National Days of Action, and in the context of local, state and federal One Fair Wage policy campaigns, in coordination with One Fair Wage campaign leadership.

The Deputy Director of Organizing and Campaigns will specifically supervise 5 Regional Directors: a Northeast RD, Southeast RD, Mid-Atlantic RD, Midwest RD, and Western RD. For 2019 and 2020, key campaign states within these regions include: NY & VT (Northeast RD); PA (Mid-Atlantic RD); MS (Southeast RD); IL (Midwest RD); CA(Western RD).

Strong candidates need not necessarily bring immediate expertise in all of the areas of our One Fair Wage Campaign, but must have strong worker organizing, management skills, effective leadership qualities, experience with large-scale or national organizing campaigns, and a creative or entrepreneurial energy in visioning and launching new initiatives.

  • At least 10-15 years of worker organizing, in the community or union context, with some experience in mobilizing workers around policy campaigns;
