Citizen Action of New York is one of the fastest-growing statewide grassroots organizations in the country. We fight for social, racial and economic justice, and an America that works for all of us. Our organizing campaigns focus on issues such as education, criminal justice, housing, campaign finance reform, and progressive taxation. We have won significant improvements in New Yorkers’ lives, and we have elected progressive candidates to office. We play a leadership role in organizing major statewide coalitions including the Alliance for Quality Education and the Health Care for All New York Coalition.

Citizen Action of New York has eight regional grassroots chapters, including one based in Rochester. We are currently seeking a Temporary EXPERIENCED Field Director for the Rochester office starting July 1st through mid-December. This work will focus on educating the community on ending mass incarceration.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Recruitment: Build a team of 4 canvassers by recruiting from within the local community. Interview prospective staff and make hiring decisions.
  • Staff Management: Train canvassing skills. Work with staff in both individual and group settings, with a particular eye towards developing leaders. Cultivate a welcoming and motivating atmosphere.
  • Canvassing: Canvass in the field (including door knocking & high trafficking areas) across Rochester. Cut turf, and train staff in the field.
  • Administration: Carefully track income and expenses. Manage the program budget and track staff time.. Maintain records for future organizing efforts. Ensure data entry & quality control is done in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Event Organizing: Create events that canvassers can help to recruit for regarding criminal justice reforms.

Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential. Candidates must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and an orientation towards handling a lot of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus, and may qualify candidates for additional leadership positions.

Position are temporary through December 2019.

The field Director will be a full-time hourly position at the rate of $18 an hour plus health care.
