Legal Administrative Coordinator

Based in Washington, DC

Annual Pay: $74,300/YR

This position is responsible for providing confidential administrative support with considerable exercise of independent judgment in support of the legal department.

  • Performs highly confidential work and administrative duties, including preparing and processing of confidential documents/information (i.e., correspondence, invoices, check requests) and assisting Ethics Ombudsperson with Ethics line; maintains records and filing systems of same.
  • Supports the SEIU attorney(s) responsible for internal union governance. This work includes providing logistical and administrative support before, during, and after internal governance proceedings. The legal administrative coordinator will work with staff person(s) responsible for logistics, as necessary, to support internal governance proceedings.
  • Maintains records within the legal department for International Executive Board meetings, legal invoices, and hearings.
  • Handles the processing and paperwork associated with legal bills, including working with outside counsel to ensure all bills are paid in a timely fashion.
  • Answers telephones and responds to inquiries and requests relative to the legal department; maintains attorney calendars and travel schedules.
  • Manages administrative projects of moderate complexity with minimal supervision; can prioritize work.
  • Assists with and completes special projects
  • Performs other duties as required to support the legal department and its mission.

SEIU officers, staff, local leaders, other unions, private organization, and/or outside counsel or organizations.

Direction and Decision Making:
This position works under general supervision and reports to the executive secretary/operations manager, and takes direction from several SEIU attorneys.

Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school and at least (5) years of executive administrative support experience or graduation from college with at least (2) two years of administrative work, preferably in a not-for-profit environment. All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of modern office practices and principles.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects exercising independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize assignments, meet deadlines and pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential information, budgets and personnel issues.
  • Skill in the use of personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting. Overtime and travel may be required.
