Starting Salary: $78,421

The AFSCME Education Department prepares members, leaders and staff to effectively lead the labor movement into the future. We shape and build powerful local unions to be lasting vehicles for a just society that works for the common good and values workers’ rights and dignity in the workplace. We ignite and fuel activism and leadership through interactive teaching methods and the use of new technologies to expand the reach of our programs. The Field Education Coordinator is responsible for implementing this mission in assigned states in the region.


  • Design and facilitate education programs for AFSCME affiliates utilizing popular education techniques.
  • Work with national union and affiliate staff and leaders to identify training objectives, plan training programs, and develop education plans for organizing and other campaigns.
  • Prepare affiliate activists and staff to conduct training programs. 
  • Provide follow-up training in the field.
  • Maintain and update the department curriculum library.
  • Make logistical arrangements associated with educational programs. 
  • Assist with nationally targeted organizing campaigns and political action campaigns as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and at least five (5) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

  • Thorough knowledge of adult teaching and learning techniques. 
  • Knowledge of labor unions and the associated training of activists, leaders, and staff. 
  • Ability to develop, design, and facilitate both online and classroom training programs and curricula
  • Ability to select or develop appropriate teaching materials and use all forms of visual aids.
  • Ability to use computer and associated software, including web-based applications. 
  • Ability to develop work plans, work with minimal direction and execute projects effectively within a prescribed plan of action. 
  • Ability to meet deadlines, measure progress, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively. 
  • Ability to conduct organizing and political conversations with workers in homes and worksites. 

Travel and Work Hours:

  • Travel and evening/weekend work are extensive and required. 
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
