The Service Employees International Union is a 2-million-member organization dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families. The Innovation & Learning Center (ILC) is a new team within SEIU created to drive and support innovation across the union, with a special focus on supporting the union's transformation into an effective 21st Century organization in a time of rapid change and considerable challenges for working people and worker organizations.

As part of this mission, the ILC supports the union's transformation into a learning organization, one that acquires knowledge and innovates fast enough to survive and thrive in a rapidly changing environment. The Learning Specialist will work with the ILC Director to develop and lead the ILC's efforts to support the union's transformation into a learning organization.

In 2019, the Learning Specialist will also oversee the redesign of teach.seiu.org, an internal digital platform for sharing best practices and fostering learning communities among SEIU staff that serves as the backbone for union-wide knowledge transmission.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategies to foster a culture that encourages and supports continuous staff learning, critical thinking, and risk-taking with new ideas; allows mistakes and values employee contributions; and learns from experience and experiment.
  • Through dialogue with leaders and staff across the union, identify knowledge gaps and needs, then collaboratively identify solutions, tools, and approaches to gain and share knowledge. Develop and implement systems to identify, gather and disseminate best practices and lessons learned across the union for incorporation into day-to-day activities.
  • Provide support for the establishment and growth of learning communities across the union, including workshops, one-on-one guidance and troubleshooting. Work with other ILC staff to nurture a community of innovation practitioners and champions.
  • Share experiences across learning communities, the IU and locals on innovative approaches in knowledge sharing
  • Help monitor and evaluate progress towards becoming a learning organization.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the department and its mission.


  • Advise, direct, and build on the vision of teach.seiu.org as a means of fostering the sharing of knowledge and lessons learned within the union and an overall culture of learning.
  • Actively oversee and manage the redesign of teach.seiu.org throughout the entire project lifecycle (from discovery to launch). Work with stakeholders, users, and vendors to ensure the delivery of a high-end digital platform that helps accelerate learning and sharing among SEIU locals and the International Union.
  • Oversee the growth of teach.seiu.org, including but not limited to managing relationships with internal stakeholders, overseeing vendors, and leading the continual optimization of user experience. Work with locals and International Union departments to curate materials on teach.seiu.org.
  • Oversee the engagement and growth of teach.seiu.org's online community, including overseeing day-to-day execution, community management and monitoring, and analysis of user and site data.


  • Innovation & Learning Center staff; Together We Rise Director, Deputy Education Director and Education Specialist; BOLD Center Director and Deputy Director; SEIU local leaders and staff; SEIU International department leaders and staff.

Direction and Decision Making:

  • This position reports to the Director of the Innovation & Learning Center (ILC) and works with minimal supervision.
  • A high level of judgment, ability to take initiatives and work independently is required.
  • Must be able to handle multiple priority projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university; at least 3 to 5 years relevant experience; or a combination of relevant educational work experiences that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff and elected officers.

Specialized Knowledge and Training

  • Experience and passion for developing, implementing and reinforcing organizational culture initiatives, including the development of programs and resources to improve learning, sharing, and transparency.
  • Demonstrated success in influencing and driving organizational change through formal and/or informal leadership.
  • Experience maintaining websites and/or social media for an organization, including content development, monitoring, and community management.
  • Experience managing vendors and overseeing internal projects with multiple stakeholders. Experience in establishing effective partnerships within and outside the organization.
  • Strong motivation and ability to continually and quickly develop skills related to the use of rapidly changing technology and community management best practices.
  • Ability to lead and direct project resources with confidence, identify and act on project issues and risks, seeing each through to its proper resolution.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to manage relationships in complex political and organizational situations.
  • Extremely strong verbal communications skills, in front of large groups and interpersonally.
  • Knowledge and understanding of labor unions - including knowledge of local union operations, union organizing, and political and advocacy campaigns - preferred but not required.)
  • Experience learning and utilizing creative training techniques and approaches to teach concepts, skills and best practices.
  • High level of individual motivation, ability to set and meet clear deadlines.

Physical Requirements
This position is based in SEIU's Washington, D.C. office. Work is generally performed in an office setting. Extended hours and travel may be required.

Ability to work effectively with a team that includes remote colleagues via phone, Skype/Google Hangout, and other digital communications
