SEIU New Jersey State Council

SEIU New Jersey State Council

Political Organizer

Based in Newark, NJ

The SEIU NJ State Council, comprised of local unions representing 23,000 service and health care workers in a variety of industries in New Jersey, seeks a part-time (24-29 hours) political organizer to coordinate the daily activities of the council and to implement its mission.

We are growing and “Stronger Together,” meaning that coordination among local union affiliates can help advance the interests of our workers in statewide initiatives such as the recent successful statewide fight for a $15 minimum wage.

  • Facilitate coordination among the affiliates in identifying where local unions can support one another’s objectives and work together with other organizations and allies on issues statewide.
  • Work at the direction of the executive board and the political consultant to coordinate the day-to-day activities of the council, including correspondence and scheduling.
  • Work closely with the bookkeeper and finance chair on budgeting issues.
  • Plan meetings and events that advance the mission of the council, provide training and involvement for rank-and-file union members.
  • Coordinate with the political and communications consultants to raise the profile of the council as a voice for working people in the state.
  • Keep abreast of politics, legislative and labor issues in the state and maintain a network of contacts to advance our interests.
  • Liaise with the International Union (SEIU) and serve as the council’s conduit for communications with the national group.
  • Provide support, materials and information to the council’s executive board.

  • Working knowledge of the political and labor landscape in New Jersey and beyond.
  • Commitment to social justice and the values of the union in advancing and protecting the rights of working people.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  • Administrative and organizing experience a plus.

The Organizer would be based in our Newark office but be available to travel to events and meetings around the state and available for occasional out-of-state travel.

Salary commensurate with experience.
