The Bureau of Labor Education, established in 1966, is a department within the University of Maine’s Division of Lifelong Learning. The Bureau provides the working people of Maine with the information and knowledge necessary to make sense of their place in history and the economic, political, and social environment in which they live.

The Research Associate supports the mission of the Bureau of Labor Education by providing appropriate and specialized educational programs for organized and unorganized workers through research, writing, teaching, presentations, grant writing, and outreach to workers and organized labor.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teaches in the Labor Studies program and related non-credit courses as appropriate to the academic qualifications and experience of the Research Associate.
  • Researches and writes on topics relevant to Labor Studies, labor education, labor unions, labor history, and the mission of the Bureau.
  • Ability to use economic and labor market data, demographic trends, state and federal case and statutory law, government regulations, and Bureau of Labor Statistics data in research and writing.
  • Develops and edits Bureau educational materials and publications, including fact sheets, articles, brochures, journal articles, curriculum guides, and press releases.
  • Builds productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Recruits students and participants for Bureau programs.
  • Researches, identifies, and writes grants in collaboration with the director.
  • Assists in the development, maintenance, and updating of the Bureau’s website.

Knowledge & Skill Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a field related to Labor Studies.
  • Familiarity with the structure and function of U.S. labor organizations and the history of the labor movement.
  • Adult education or undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience using spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability to use WordPress to maintain websites (preferred).
  • Experience researching, writing and editing grants (preferred).
  • Experience working across disciplines and with undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrated success in working with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to travel, normally requiring a valid driver’s license.

Position Type: Regular, exempt, part-time (0.5 FTE), 10-month
Possibility of flexible telecommuting based on departmental needs.
