The Southeastern Pennsylvania Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO is comprised of a coalition of unions throughout the 5 county suburban Philadelphia region. We are a progressive coalition that works to give political voice to working families in our area by fighting for social and economic justice. The position is based in Plymouth Meeting, PA.

The Southeastern PA AFL-CIO is seeking an Executive Director to oversee all aspects of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and an understanding of its goals.
  • 4-7 years minimum experience preferred in union, community, or political organizing and mobilization.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision; must be well organized and self-motivated.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to produce basic newsletters and leaflets.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the jurisdiction on a regular basis.
  • Strong computer skills including sound knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel and Word).
  • Familiarity and experience with basic administrative office functions.

PROGRAMATIC PRIORITIES INCLUDE:

  1. BUILDING A STRONG POLITICAL PROGRAM. Under the direction of the AFL-CIO leadership and consistent with national and affiliate goals, the Executive Director will implement a plan each election cycle that builds and exercises labor’s political power. The Executive Director will develop workplace and other communications systems with affiliates to better educate and activate union members in support of issue campaigns and endorsed candidates. The Executive Director will also work to mobilize unions in all aspects of labor’s political program including canvassing, phones, workplace organizing and other labor political programs.
  2. BUILDING PARTICIPATION IN ALL AFL-CIO PRIORITY PROGRAMS. Working with Central Labor Councils, local unions, and community allies, the Executive Director will assist in the development and continued implementation of a communication and mobilization system that increases participation and expands labor’s ability to create strategic programs. This should include information on issues important to labor as well as elections and other pertinent information that would be beneficial to the labor movement.
  3. BUILDING COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIP AND COALITIONS. The Executive Director will facilitate the development of closer ties and effective working relationship between labor and likeminded community, progressive and religious organizations throughout the region.
  4. GROWTH RESPONSIBILITIES. Working under the direction of the Southeastern PA AFL-CIO Executive Board and Central Labor Councils, the Executive Director will assist in increasing affiliation to the Southeastern PA AFL-CIO and building ties with unaffiliated unions.
  5. BUILDING SUPPORT FOR AFFILIATE ORGANIZING. The Executive Director will assist area unions wherever possible in achieving their organizing assistance plan. This may include creation of an organizer’s roundtable, development of political and community leverage, facilitating sharing of resources for home visits, creation of a pool of multi-language organizers, as well as activities that show support to affected workers.
