Organizing Director

Based in Los Angeles, CA

The California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) is a non-partisan, non-profit statewide organization founded in response to the 1996 passage of federal immigrant and welfare laws that profoundly affected immigrants. CIPC helps to develop and support pro-immigrant public policy to improve the quality of life for all Californians. CIPC also provides technical assistance, training and education on immigrant issues.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Organizing Director (OD) is a member of CIPC’s leadership team, as such he/she is responsible for creating a vision for CIPC’s organizing and membership functions. The OD ensures that the organizing work is aligned with CIPC’s policy priorities and each policy campaign has focus on community and building community power. The OD maintains and develops CIPC’s member organizations structures, including general membership, regional coalition partners, and the organization’s steering committee. He manages diversity of groups and retention and political development of the organizations so that they are deeply entrenched in the common cause of an increasingly progressive immigrant’s right agenda.

Travel to our offices in Northern California and other locations as necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes new members, building coalitions among diverse interests, needs, and audiences across the state;
  • Builds new and deep alliances in the labor sector;
  • Builds leadership capacity of the organization within each close partner organization;
  • Assists with organizer training and ongoing staff development;
  • Helps to maintain a consistent theme and message in the organizers’ conversations through debriefs, redirection, practicing the rap, and role playing as necessary;
  • Is a resource for, and provides trainings and technical assistance to members, community based organizations, and other partners on various issues
  • Leads meetings, events and actions planning, turnout, and phone banks as needed for legislative wins;
  • Oversees the maintenance of up-to-date data entry for all organizers and assists with data entry and all necessary tracking;
  • Monitors implementation of new laws and regulations, and makes recommendations and adjustments to organizational strategy;
  • Engages in research as needed collecting data and information on existing policies;
  • Develops and collects materials for outreach and political development of member orgs.;
  • Work with the Communications Team to develop content for the website and electronic mailers;
  • Maintains and produces regular organizing reports detailing development towards organizational goals;
  • Assists with fundraising efforts to support organizing work.

Requirements:

  • Five- eight years of experience in effective organizing & coalition building for immigrant rights, health policy and/or economic justice and a demonstrated ability to lead;
  • Experience analyzing impact of laws, regulations, and legislative proposals;
  • Ability to develop educational and outreach materials;
  • Ability to conduct effective outreach and relational organizing in another language, preferably Spanish;
  • Ability to facilitate and engage broad coalitions and experience working with diverse communities and audiences preferred;
  • Experience working with immigrant rights organizations and community-based groups in California is preferred.
  • Ability to drive and access to a vehicle is required.

Salary commensurate with experience. CIPC provides a comprehensive benefits package to its employees, including paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement contributions and parking access. We provide generous paid time off to staff including closing each year for a week long winter recess at the end of the calendar year.
