Staff Director

Based in Portland, OR

Oregon Federation of Nurses and Healthcare Professionals (OFNHP) Local 5017 represents 5,500 nurses and healthcare professionals in Oregon and Washington, most of them employees of Kaiser Permanente, with a growing number from the PeaceHealth system. OFNHP is an affiliate of the Nurses and Health Professionals division of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

The OFNHP Staff Director shall direct and supervise the daily activities of the Program Organizing staff. Develop a team that functions to bring continuity between programs and aligns with the Executive Board’s strategic plan and fulfilling its mission statement. Working in conjunction with the President ensuring staff of the union are carrying out strategic priorities and that staff work is aligned and coordinated in a way that maximizes what the union can do to engage, mobilize and empower OFNHP members with our current resources.

Responsible for ensuring a collaborative team culture that sets high standards is mission driven and encourages innovative and creative thinking while executing our values, mission and strategic plan on behalf of OFNHP members and the communities we serve.

Supervision: Reports to the President or their designee. This position is exempt.
Supervises: Organizing Staff

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)

  • Creates and administers an internal organizing plan that will engage and mobilize members of OFNHP and coordinate with other programs within the organization;
  • Budget development to support mobilization, campaigns and engagement;
  • Authorizes expenditures within approved budget to the max allowed by the OFNHP policy;
  • Help obtain and coordinate AFT Resources;
  • Establish and maintain accountability for staff;
  • Oversee staff professional development and personnel issues;
  • Provide regular updates to President and Executive Board;
  • Advises personnel committee on recruitment and hiring of staff;
  • Work with President on administering discipline up to and including dismissal, with report out to personnel committee;
  • Chief spokesperson for OFNHP in internal staff union contract negotiations, and other contract negotiations;
  • Enforces all OFNHP policies
  • Other duties as assigned by the President

The Staff Director position requires a high level of judgment, leadership and commitment to the Executive Board’s strategic plan and the mission of OFNHP. The Staff Director must be able to work independently with elected leaders. The Staff Director must have experience in leading staff, staff supervision, planning and budgeting.

Previous experience as Staff Director, Executive Director, or similar position in the labor movement, or closely related field, including experience in supervising staff:

  • Proven leadership skills and experience; demonstrated track record of good judgement in highly complex situations involving staff, member leadership and political relationships;
  • Significant experience in bargaining/representation, organizing and/or political work in the labor movement;
  • Excellent communication and writing skills. The proven ability to craft sharp and compelling negotiation and political campaigns, messages, raps, literature; the ability to train others on campaign messaging and delivery techniques;
  • Exhibit good analytical skills that produce good strategic decisions;
  • Commitment to the labor movement and a strong work ethic; functions with a high-level of integrity, transparency, and ability to give and receive feedback;
  • Experience with writing and managing a budget;
  • Computer Skills, ability to use Microsoft Office Program, Excel Spreadsheets, Google Documents and other Data bases;
  • Language Skills – Spanish, and/or others is preferred;
  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License and working car
