Retiree Organizer

SEIU Healthcare Minnesota is a union representing 35,000 health care workers who have united to build strong communities, a health care system that works for everyone, and to reclaim the American Dream. We are seeking a qualified candidate who wants to be a part of an exciting, active and creative labor union.

Responsibilities: The Retiree Organizer will play a leadership role in the recruitment, mobilization, and leadership development of Union Retiree Members. The work will include grassroots outreach, building strong individual relationships, building issue campaigns on issues like affordable housing, transportation, and protecting social security, Medicare and pensions. The Retiree Organizer will also coordinate with other organizations and coalitions that members choose to join and mobilize retiree members ahead of the November 2018 election. Candidates must be up to the challenge of building relationships with leaders across differences in race, class and ability. Significant evening and weekend work may be required.

The Retiree Organizer will:

  • Visit retirees at their homes and worksites to invite them to join as members
  • Identify, recruit, train, and develop member-leaders through the Retiree Organizing Committee
  • Mobilize members to meetings, direct actions and other events through phone calls and other methods
  • Coordinate logistics, collect and manage data, and keep accurate records
  • Attend meetings and respond to requests as directed
  • Build relationships with existing community leaders and organizations
  • Create member communications through leaflets, email and social media
  • Other responsibilities as may be assigned


  • Previous union, community or political organizing experience is preferred
  • Experience working with seniors is preferred
  • Candidates must have a passion for social justice and grassroots organizing as a means of social change.
  • Experience working with people from widely varying ethnic, social, economic and political groups
  • Good listening skills; able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent group facilitation skills
  • Able to manage conflict, work with complex information and work under pressure
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Able to function in computerized environment, including working knowledge of Word, Excel, Email, Internet and campaign-related databases
  • Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle in good working condition. Must have proof of auto insurance.
  • Must have cell phone and computer
  • High School Diploma or GED, Secondary Education preferred

Compensation includes weekly salary of $680, paid sick and safe time, health insurance, phone reimbursement, and mileage reimbursement.
