Staff Representative

Based in Trenton, NJ
(with daily travel to Mercer County area)


CWA Local 1036 is a statewide local union representing 7,000 members working in the public and private sector. Our members work for the State of New Jersey, County and Municipal government units, and the private sector healthcare industry. Our members live and work in every county in NJ, with a concentration in Mercer, Burlington, Hunterdon and southern NJ counties.

We are seeking motivated, professional, and progressive candidates for full-time positions that will combine member representation work, internal organizing, and leadership development with our stewards and members in the field.


  • Direct member representation: grievances, disciplinary appeals, workplace disputes, departmental and arbitration hearings, labor management meetings
  • Field work – worksite meetings, member committee building and meetings, steward recruitment and development
  • Internal organizing – motivating non-members to join the union
  • Mobilization around issue campaigns: negotiating contracts, fighting privatization efforts, lobbying around legislation affecting our membership, getting out an informed union vote in key political contests

Specific units:

  • Representation-intensive unit with concentration on casework (disciplines and grievances), member questions and complaints, investigations
  • Blue-collar, Trump-voting union members: focused on daily representation issues, maintaining a strong union presence in each work site but creating a more progressive agenda is a continuing project.

Travel to Mercer County area every day is expected. Field work is consistent, but driving to/from Mercer will be part of the job. Applicants living outside of central Jersey area should be aware.


  • Effective analytical and communication skills are a must; ability to read, think and write clearly and convincingly; talk and think on your feet; make an effective oral argument.
  • Talk to large and small groups, motivate others to join the union or take action
  • Strong organization skills with ability to multi-task and pay attention to follow-up
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and email programs
  • Able to set and meet important deadlines, operate with a high level of personal responsibility

Work experience in the labor movement, issue campaigns, field organizing, social work, politics, or legal fields preferred. Experience and familiarity with public sector/government employment, NJ politics, or labor organizing are advantageous.

Other: Driver’s License and reliable transportation required.

Salary is competitive. Benefits package includes medical and prescription, dental, 401k, paid vacation and sick leave.

Travel is required as needed.
