Executive Director

Based in San Jose, CA

Role of the Executive Director

  • Manage 300 staff in 12 offices and an annual operating budget of $65 million. Approximately 175 staff are Labor Relations Representatives.
  • Maximize the union’s political power, engage our members and staff, and ensure they have knowledge and resources to be effective.
  • Serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors.

Examples of duties and responsibilities

  • Create and maintain relationships with the Association President and Board of Directors.
  • Set critical priorities for dealing with right-to-work initiatives by involving the Board and key staff.
  • Manage and direct Field operations, priorities, structure and technology.
  • Engage in long-term financial planning to ensure pensions, health care and capital investments are funded.
  • Build relationships with other unions and coalition partners.
  • Direct legislative advocacy and election efforts.
  • Select, develop and manage senior staff.
  • Present an operating budget to delegates at CSEA’s Annual Conference for approval.

The ideal candidate will have the following background

Experience and Education:

  • Executive experience directing a union, association or non-profit organization of comparable size and budget.
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Personal Qualities:

  • Committed to social change and building the union movement
  • Promotes a values-driven, engaged culture
  • Thinks strategically and demonstrates leadership
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Influence; integrity; inspires confidence and trust
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining, public employee pensions, elections and ballot initiatives, political action and management.

  • Gain trust and confidence of members and member leaders
  • Engage in strategic planning with the CSEA Board of Directors and staff
  • Manage change
  • Inspire, develop and lead staff
  • Quickly develop an understanding of CSEA culture

  • Be a trusted advisor
  • Handle high pressure situations with tact and professionalism 
  • Travel, work occasional irregular hours or weekends
