Position: AFL-CIO Labor Liaison
Reports to: President/CEO of the United Way of Greater Lima
Location: Lima, Ohio

United Way and the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) have enjoyed a beneficial and long-lasting partnership that has engaged hundreds of thousands of working people—union members and non-members alike—in programs that benefit communities across the country, and assisted millions of workers in their time of need.

The United Way of Greater Lima and the West Central Ohio Central Labor Council, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, are seeking qualified candidates for the position of AFL-CIO Labor Liaison with the United Way of Greater Lima.

The AFL-CIO Labor Liaison supports all functions of United Way and AFL-CIO partnership and the mutual interests of both organizations and their strategic objectives for the greater good of the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create an annual work plan and goals in collaboration with the Presidents of United Way of Greater Lima and West Central Labor Council.
  • Develop relationships with local union leaders to explore opportunities for programmatic collaboration and develop strategies to increase giving and volunteerism.
  • Develop labor and community- based coalitions and partnerships and oversee efforts to highlight working family and social justice issues that are of mutual interest to United Way and Central Labor Council.
  • Develop and support joint Labor-Management fundraising campaigns by analyzing data and developing strategies and goals to increase support.
  • Establish baseline data on giving and volunteerism to determine progress on established goals and maintain data on organized labor donors and volunteers.
  • Identify and assist with recruiting of labor volunteers for key United Way committees and Board of Directors.
  • Attend local union meetings and training programs as deemed appropriate.
  • Develop and deliver in collaboration with the UW President training programs on social services and the benefits of United Way for labor unions and to build volunteer capacity for United Way and the labor movement.
  • Work with the President to develop volunteer project/initiative that aligns with United Way’s Strategic Direction.
  • Collaborate with the West Central Ohio CLC on projects/initiatives that help increase United Way’s recognition and presence within the labor community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the mission of United Way.


  • Experience in organized labor and non-profit communities
  • Experience working for social and economic justice, building community-labor coalitions and developing community partnerships
  • Training, volunteer management, and leadership development skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to develop relationships with both union and management
  • Project management skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Public Speaking skills
  • Computer skills
  • A member in good standing with a union affiliated with the AFL-CIO or willing to become a member of a union affiliated with the Central Labor Council is preferred
  • Must have valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
