Organizing Director
Based in Portland / Tigard, OR
The Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, AFT Local 5017, represents over 6,500 nurses and health professionals in Oregon and Southwest Washington, who are employees of Kaiser Permanente, PeaceHealth, St. Charles, Lab Corp, Legacy, and Adventist Health Systems. OFNHP is an affiliate of the Nurses and Health Professionals division of the AFT, AFL-CIO.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Organizing Director for OFNHP develops and implements, with input from the Chief of Staff, OFNHP Board, and AFT, the strategic plan for organizing workers into the union. The Organizing Director oversees the day-to-day work of all organizing projects and coordinates the work of organizers and member organizers.
The Organizing Director, with guidance from the Board, will identify key strategic areas of growth, develop campaign plans, coordinate with other organizations and coalitions, and provide regular reports to the Executive Board and officers, as well as to AFT as requested.
The Organizing Director position requires a high level of critical thinking, judgment, leadership, and commitment. The Organizing Director must be able to collaborate with elected leaders and have substantial experience creating, implementing, and supervising organizing campaigns while empowering organizing staff and members.
REPONSIBILITIES
- Develop strategic organizing plans, including goals and benchmarks for measuring success, for organizing workers into OFNHP.
- Oversee and drive external OFNHP campaigns, both current and future, and identify external campaigns for future OFNHP strategic growth.
- Oversee and participate in the organizing of new bargaining units into OFNHP.
- Oversee and participate in internal organizing campaigns.
- Supervise staff, release/loss-time member organizers, and volunteers.
- Coordinate and participate in the day-to-day work of project organizers, member organizers, and volunteers working on OFNHP organizing campaigns.
- Build internal capacity and prepare a unit to bargain a successful contract.
- Build member leaders and train staff to do the same through support of the member-led Leadership Development Committee.
- Tie together the threads of multiple campaigns, bargaining units, and members to keep OFNHP’s goals front and center and create cohesion amongst all turf and bargaining units.
- Identify political and community leverage points and manage existing organizers to accomplish long-term goals through comprehensive campaigns.
- Represent OFNHP in meetings with other organizations and coalitions as requested.
- Help develop the budget, approved and overseen by the OFNHP Executive Board and Budget Committee.
- Provide timely and regular reports to the President and/or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience as Organizing Director and/or similar position in the labor movement and/or other closely related field required.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in union, community, and/or political organizing, including bargaining collective agreements, performing representational work, and organizing internal and/or external programs.
- Experience with campaign development and fundamentals of organizing, including choosing an issue, developing strategy, and selecting escalation tactics.
- Experience developing and facilitating participatory meetings and trainings.
- Ability to supervise staff and/or volunteers.
- Proven leadership skills and experience, with a demonstrated record of sound judgment in highly complex situations involving union staff, member leaders, and political relationships.
- Excellent ability to listen to, motivate, and nurture the leadership of others.
- Effective time management, including prioritizing and managing tasks and ensuring accountability to work plans and goals.
- Effective analytical skills that produce strategic decisions.
- Commitment to the labor movement and a strong work ethic; functions with a high level of integrity and transparency and the ability to give and receive feedback.
- Experience developing campaign communications and effectively integrating communications into a campaign plan.
- A strong commitment to social, racial, and economic justice.
- Ability to demonstrate confidentiality and appropriate discretion at all times.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to cultivate and maintain relationships.
- Strong attention to detail and organization.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and work independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Reliable transportation.
- Ability to travel in and out of state as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience as a director level leadership in a union.
- Greater than five (5) years in a leadership role with increasing responsibilities.
- Experience in a healthcare union environment.
- Deep knowledge of public and private sector labor laws.
- Deep knowledge and understanding of issues and problems facing healthcare workers in Oregon and SW Washington.
- Experience bargaining healthcare contracts, including first contracts.
- Experience analyzing and preparing budgets.
- Knowledge of Labor Management Partnerships.
SUPERVISION:
The position reports directly to the OFNHP President or their designee.

This position is salaried, exempt, confidential, and at will. The position will include a competitive benefits package, and wages will be determined by experience.
