Union Organizer

Based in Augusta, ME

 

Annual Salary Range: $62,129 – $83,304

Summary: Maine Service Employees Association, SEIU Local 1989, is seeking to hire an experienced union professional to expand a strategic and aggressive organizing effort in Maine.

Description: MSEA-SEIU Local 1989 represents roughly 13,000 public and private sector workers across Maine. We are committed to fundamentally changing the conditions for workers throughout Maine by organizing a variety of workers across the private and public sectors statewide.

Duties:

1. Conduct new/external NLRB organizing campaigns. 
2. Identify and recruit workplace leaders to organize campaigns through house visits and one-on-one meetings.
3. Respond to new organizing requests from non-unionized workers. 
4. Lead organizing committee meetings to support new organizing drives and internal organizing/escalating contract and issue-based campaigns.
5. Build communication and organizing capacity among members at the worksite level and across the Local. 
6. Perform corporate research and quickly learn complex laws and regulations.
7. Identify, recruit, train, and support member leaders as part of MSEA’s steward leadership program. 
8. Build and maintain internal membership recruitment programs by supporting field representatives and stewards with tools, lists, data, and organizing support.
9. Engage members in union activity by identifying worksite issues, organizing around shared concerns, and supporting collective action. 
10. Support worksite organizing committees and staff in building escalating contract and issue-based campaigns.
11. Work with volunteers to organize and mobilize workers for legislative campaigns.
12. Will support communication organizing to tell worker stories in campaigns and throughout the local. 
13. The organizer may be assigned representational services duties as needed.
14. Other duties as assigned. 

Requirements:

• Demonstrated commitment to the principles of organized labor to build power for working people;
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to workers from a wide range of backgrounds;
• Ability to be self-directed, think on your feet, and solve problems creatively;
• Must be able to work independently and follow strategic campaign plans;
• Proficient with computers, internet research tools, and Microsoft applications;
• Ability to write reports and summaries, and to utilize databases;
• Must be able to travel for extended periods, and to work long hours, including nights and weekends as needed;
• Must have a car and a valid driver’s license;
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field preferred.

This position is a bargaining unit position.
