Union Organizing & Contract Enforcement Intern
(Part Time)

Based in Garden City, NY

 

The Adelphi University AAUP-AFT (Faculty Union) is seeking a motivated and organized Union Organizing & Contract Enforcement Intern to assist with union organizing, member outreach, contract enforcement, research, and the day-to-day work of the Faculty Union.

This position is designed for someone who wants to gain practical experience in the labor movement. We will provide training in union organizing and contract enforcement from AAUP National and you will have the opportunity to work directly on issues affecting faculty members in higher education.

The position is open to graduate students and non-students. A background in labor, organizing, higher education, law/paralegal work, public policy, communications, or a related field is welcome but not required.

Responsibilities
Depending on experience and interests, responsibilities may include:

• Supporting union organizing and membership outreach
• Events planning for member meetings and union events
• Communicating with union members and prospective members
• Developing relationships with faculty at Adelphi and identifying workplace concerns
• Researching issues related to higher education, collective bargaining and contract enforcement
• Reviewing and organizing information concerning potential contract violations
• Assisting with union communications, including email, newsletters, social media, and other outreach
• Maintaining and organizing union records
• Assisting with preparation for collective bargaining

Qualifications
We are looking for someone who is:

• Skilled in the use of social media
• Interested in labor organizing, workplace advocacy, and workers' rights
• Reliable, organized, and able to work independently
• A strong communicator with good writing and interpersonal skills
• Comfortable speaking with people and developing professional relationships
• Able to handle confidential information responsibly
• Curious, willing to learn, and able to take initiative

The most important factor is motivation, professionalism and strong communication skills. Training in AAUP principles and practices will be provided.

Compensation and Schedule

• $25 – $35 per hour (pay based on experience and expertise)
• Part-time, approximately [10–15] hours per week 
• Schedule will fluctuate based on the academic calendar, bargaining cycle and schedule of candidate 
• Based in Garden City, New York (some office presence required)
