Location: Primarily based in the Minneapolis Metro Area
Starting Salary & Benefits: $70,000+ (depending upon experience); Employer Paid Health Insurance, Pension, $450 a Month Car Allowance, Cell Phone, Car Insurance Reimbursement and Generous Paid Time Off

UNITE HERE Local 17 is Minnesota’s Hospitality Union. We represent more than 6,000 workers in hotels, restaurants, sports complexes, convention centers, and the airport in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and surrounding suburbs. We are proud to be a diverse union, comprising workers from many immigrant communities speaking more than 17 languages. Our priorities are to negotiate great contracts for our members, empower workers to have a voice on the job, and organize non-union workers. 

JOB SUMMARY:
UNITE HERE Local 17 Director of Representation should be self-motivated and will be responsible for directing the representation of the membership of UNITE HERE Local 17. The position involves directing our grievance department in enforcing and negotiating the collective bargaining agreements. We are looking for a collaborative teammate who communicates effectively and adapts quickly when plans change.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Member of lead team working with the UNITE HERE Local 17 President and Organizing Director to develop and execute a bargaining plan and overall strategy of the Union’s organizing program.
  • Direct and support grievance department staff, chief stewards, and members in enforcing our collective bargaining agreements (all steps of grievance handling, including mediation and arbitration)
  • Able to be a lead negotiator in more complex negotiations Including: working with organizer(s) to develop proposals from input of the workers, developing bargaining strategy,  presenting proposals to the company in negotiations. 
  • Ability to run shop steward trainings and take workers on LOA to train them in the grievance department
  • Able to lead staff in less complex negotiations including: providing training and support to staff and/or high level stewards that are learning how to be first chair in negotiations
  • Communicate effectively, including written materials such as leaflets, fliers, texts, and letters to meet members’ needs
  • It is necessary for an applicant to be flexible and open to changes to the ever changing landscape of organizing the working class to build real power
  • Ability to learn and utilize UNITE HERE databases and other software systems

This position reports to UNITE HERE Local 17 President and Organizing Director. This position requires a high-level independent decision making and self-motivation. 

Based out of our Minneapolis office. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
  • Experience with enforcing collective bargaining agreements at all steps of grievance handling process, including mediations and arbitrations;
  • Self-motivated, work independently, and stay on task and on time;
  • Knowledge of Federal and State labor laws;
  • Ability to navigate complex interpersonal relationships or workers in a given workplace or industry
  • Ability to train and educate others;
  • Required to work irregular/extended work hours, including evenings and weekends, with occasional overnight stays depending on the work needed
  • Must own or be willing to purchase a vehicle..

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish/Amharic/Somali 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Open to all levels of Education as long as you meet the required experience level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is performed from the UNITE HERE office and various bargaining sites.
  • Driving, minor travel, and extended work hours are required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • The ability to observe details at a close range.
