Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD)
AFSCME Local 206
Social Media Manager
UC Physician Campaign
Primarily remote / production-based
(periodic travel)
Pay: $35/hour, part-time (20–30 hours/week)
Hiring priority: Critical — this position is hired first
The Opportunity
The Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD/AFSCME Local 206) – the nation’s largest union of fully licensed doctors, representing physicians and dentists in California since 1972 – is running a major campaign to organize physicians across the University of California system. UAPD already holds a ratified UC contract covering Student Health physicians. This campaign extends physician-governed representation to attendings across six campuses. Social media is the campaign’s air cover: it builds the recognition and trust that makes every 1-on-1, townhall, and website visit land. Every post drives to one destination, and every post has to be able to withstand a skeptical, highly educated audience.
Who we’re looking for: experience managing social media for a campaign, union, advocacy organization, or brand, with a track record of hitting a disciplined, high-volume posting cadence on deadline.
Position Details
Status: Part-time, 20–30 hours/week
Base & travel: Primarily remote/production-based; periodic travel to UC campuses for townhalls, press conferences, and event content capture
Schedule: Flexible within the campaign rhythm, but must be reliably available around the Mon/Wed/Fri posting cadence and event weeks; some early mornings, evenings, and weekends around events and rapid-response needs
Equipment: Equipment and event-travel expenses covered
Performance Targets
Goal: 30 posts / month (~7 per week) across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and X; a cross-post counts once
Target: 20 posts / month (4 per week) – the baseline cadence that must never be missed
Stories: 5+ story sets / week on Instagram/Facebook: countdowns, polls, Q&A boxes, reshares
Core Responsibilities
- Own execution of the weekly content calendar against the Goal and Target volume standards above, publishing consistently across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, and YouTube.
- Produce 5+ story sets per week: countdown stickers for events, polls that feed the issue-pattern dashboard, Q&A boxes, and same-day reshares of Doctor Voices content.
- Draft and design content across the campaign’s content pillars – Doctor Voices, Protection & Rights, Contract Receipts, Political Power, Myth vs. Fact, and Patients Over Profit – from provided source material and campaign messaging.
- Run the approval workflow on every post: draft, route for approval, publish – with same-day priority on rapid-response posts answering a management or competitor message.
- Maintain platform strategy: LinkedIn as primary for attendings (credential-forward, longer copy), Instagram/Facebook for stories and video, X for political and rapid response, YouTube for the video series and townhall clips.
- Apply consent and accuracy standards on every post: written consent before any physician’s name, face, or campus identifier is posted; every factual claim traced to a source asset; no disparagement of other unions or organizations.
- Capture and produce event content: townhall countdowns, live quote cards, and next-day recap clips.
- Log poll results and Q&A-box questions to the campaign tracker, and report monthly against posts published, link clicks, interest-form fills, townhall RSVPs, and engagement rate by content pillar.
Content Pillars
- Doctor Voices – first-person physician stories and testimonials on why representation matters at this stage of a career.
- Protection & Rights – plain-language explainers on HEERA organizing rights, card confidentiality, and protection from retaliation.
- Contract Receipts – real language and outcomes from UAPD-negotiated contracts, one clause or win at a time, always with a citation.
- Political Power – UAPD’s legislative record and where the union stands on scope-of-practice and related bills affecting physicians.
- Myth vs. Fact – direct, factual answers to the most common objections: dues, strikes, and what a contract changes with management.
- Patients Over Profit – workload and patient-care realities, framed around what collective representation actually changes.
What We’re Looking For
- Demonstrated ability to sustain a high-volume, deadline-driven posting cadence for an organization, campaign, or brand – not just occasional content, but a reliable weekly rhythm.
- Strong writing ability and comfort adapting message and tone across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, and YouTube.
- Working knowledge of platform publishing, scheduling tools, and basic analytics; comfort with lightweight design or video editing tools.
- Good judgment with sensitive, consent-based, and legally reviewed content, and the discipline to work inside an approval process rather than around it.
- Ability to turn source material – contract language, legislative records, member stories – into accurate, citable, campaign-ready copy.
What Success Looks Like
The campaign consistently hits or exceeds the 30-post monthly goal without ever dropping below the 20-post/4-per-week target, and story output holds at 5+ sets per week. Doctor Voices content leads engagement across the account. Rapid-response posts go out within 48 hours. Every post can be traced back to a source, and the monthly numbers – clicks, RSVPs, form fills – show social media doing its job of feeding the field.
Hiring Process
Application screen – résumé, portfolio, and draft posts (decision within 24 hours) → final panel → references and offer. Strong candidates move from application to offer in 5–7 business days; applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and exceptional candidates may receive offers before the posting closes.
How to Apply
Submit a résumé, a brief portfolio, a set of links showing social media accounts or campaigns you have managed, and two draft posts written for this campaign.
For the draft posts: For the Instagram post, build each post from one piece of source material of your choice – see the content pillars above for examples and framing.
For each post, include a short rationale covering why you chose that platform, which content pillar it fits, and what the call to action is.
We’ll be reading for three things: accuracy (does the claim actually trace back to the source), voice (does it read like UAPD’s Doctor Voices / Fact Friday tone rather than generic marketing copy), and judgment (would this survive our approval process, or would a skeptical physician poke a hole in it).
Send to Pierre King, UAPD Director of Organizing – pking@uapd.com.
UAPD is committed to building a diverse team and encourages applications from communicators of varied backgrounds. Experience with labor, political, or advocacy campaigns is relevant but not required.
