Healthcare Constituency Coordinator
Based in Michigan
AFT Michigan is seeking an experienced and energized person to join our dynamic statewide union of educators and healthcare providers as our Healthcare Constituency Coordinator. This position is one of three Constituency Coordinators, each focused on one of our main membership constituencies: Healthcare, Higher Education, and PreK-12 Education. Our team works with approximately 100 local unions across the state to build strong locals, develop leadership, bargain and enforce contracts, organize, and work for social justice. AFT is one of the fastest-growing unions in the country and our Healthcare division is rapidly expanding. AFT Michigan represents more than 7,000 allied health professionals, physician assistants, and resident physicians in facilities across the state. Our Healthcare Constituency Coordinator will strengthen AFT Michigan by:
- Building the political, legislative, community, and communications capacity of our healthcare locals;
- Helping develop our statewide policy priorities by bringing together leaders within our constituency committees with allies and other stakeholders in the field;
- Engaging locals in political and legislative campaigns to improve conditions for our members and patients;
- Supporting local campaigns via political and community outreach;
- Supporting skill-sharing and leadership development within networks of local leaders;
- Facilitating connections between AFT Michigan leaders and potential allies and resources;
- Building a stronger AFT Michigan and labor movement; and
- Accomplishing other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Independent project management skills
- Leadership development and meeting facilitation
- Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds
- Ability to listen actively and frame issues
- Experience in unions or other social justice organizations
- Knowledge of healthcare and labor issues
- Engagement in the political process
- Demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively
- General computer literacy and proficiency in basic data management
- Willingness to work long hours and participate in union-wide activities
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Policy development and advocacy experience
- Collective bargaining and contract enforcement experience
- Union organizing experience
- Adult education experience
Competitive salary ($95,000 – $145,000 based on experience) and excellent benefits commensurate with the collective bargaining agreement between AFT Michigan and the AFT Michigan Staff Union. This position is based in southeast Michigan but requires travel across the state.
