Union Representative / Organizer

Based in Bay Area, Northern CA

 

The Engineers and Scientists of California Local 20, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, AFL-CIO & CLC is a democratic labor union representing nearly 10,000 workers throughout California. The Local is headquartered in Oakland and has an experienced, stable, and united Executive Board. ESC Local 20 members are highly skilled professionals employed principally at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (“PG&E”), Kaiser Permanente, Southern California Edison, private and public health care facilities, local and federal government agencies, and legal non-profits. 

ESC Local 20 seeks to hire an experienced Union Representative/Organizer. This individual will work closely with the elected leadership and the Executive Director in creating and executing campaigns to build membership and union power. ESC Local 20 is looking for candidates who have at least three (3) years of experience representing workers and bargaining contracts in the labor movement, preferably with technical and professional workers.

Duties include:

  • contract negotiations and campaigns
  • providing support for ongoing labor-management structures 
  • grievance administration and contract enforcement
  • member development and training
  • supporting ESC’s goals and political program
  • organizing non-union workplaces to join the union
  • understanding of technical details in complex contract review and enforcement 

Compensation is highly competitive, and step placement is dependent on experience and qualifications. Initial salary range is $128,481 to $155,396 depending on experience. Outstanding benefits package includes 100% employer-paid family medical and prescription coverage. ESC provides a 401K/Pension employer contribution of 21% of the annual base salary. The position has generous time-off benefits that include vacation and compensatory time off provisions. 

Minimum qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A team player who possesses the ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to think strategically and exercise a high degree of judgment
  • Candidates possess a minimum of 3 years experience bargaining complex contracts

Requirements:
The Union Representative/Organizer will be headquartered in Oakland and the route assignment includes bay area and northern California bargaining units. The job will require travel as part of representation and organizing drives. Work can include long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. A valid Driver’s License and insurability are a requirement for this position. Willing to complete a background check.
