Lead External Organizer

Based in Burbank, CA

 

IATSE Local 871 is seeking candidates for the position of Lead External Organizer. IATSE Local 871 represents a diverse group of crafts in Film, Television, Commercial, and Sports Broadcast Production - Script Supervisors, Teleprompter Operators, Production and Assistant Production Coordinators, Art Department Coordinators, Production Accountants, Assistant Accountants, and Payroll Accountants, Script Coordinators, Writers’ Assistants, and varied Sports Broadcast Crafts. 

Presently, there are two organizing campaigns underway between two distinct crafts.

IATSE Local 871 is looking for candidates who have broad experience with organizing campaigns, representing workers in the Labor movement, and with onsite recruitment for real-time workplace organizing.

As a public face of the Union in organizing campaigns, the Organizer must promote the vision of the Union to the unorganized workers; explore organizing targets to gather data and information; conduct one-on-one worker assessments to recruit supporters and leaders accurately; identify attitudes of individual workers to be able to plan appropriate messaging/actions; develop and lead worker mobilizations; conduct regular meetings with organizing committees; write field plans for reaching and implementing the overall organizing goal; recruit volunteers from within the membership; perform related work as required. 

The position involves organizing highly specialized workers and requires the ability to listen carefully and to quickly assess their needs and grievances.

Duties of the Organizer include: 

  • External and internal organizing
  • Contract administration
  • Membership advocacy
  • Developing and implementing long-term recruitment and organizing programs to increase membership size and strength, and other duties related to the goals of the union
  • Responsible for participating in all aspects of an organizing campaign including assessing potential organizing targets, assessing worker/voters, building and maintaining worker lists, creating organizing committees and making worksite visits
  • Planning and implementing organizing models to include targeting, election campaigns, card-check campaigns, and first contract campaigns. 

This position may require travel, as well as conduct evening and weekend work. This position reports to the Business Representative.

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and group communication skills and self-motivation with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision. Must be familiar with Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Share Point, etc. Must be able to learn and become proficient with using company databases and other software.

Additional requirements
The starting salary range is $75,000 – $80,000 commensurate with experience and includes a generous benefits package.

Work can include long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. A valid driver’s license and insurance is a requirement for this position.
