Purpose
The Nursing Professional Development Coordinator advances the mission of the Ohio Nurses Association by developing, coordinating, and evaluating educational programs that strengthen nursing practice, cultivate union leaders, and empower nurses and health professionals to advocate for quality patient care and safe workplaces. This position is responsible for the planning and implementation of live, blended, and independent learning activities in compliance with the requirements of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC) and the Ohio Board of Nursing. The Coordinator also supports ONA’s professional practice, leadership development, advocacy, and member engagement initiatives, helping to build the knowledge, skills, and collective power of nurses and health professionals across Ohio.
Essential Functions:
Continuing Education – General
- Helps to create, review, evaluate and revise the philosophy and overall strategy of the Continuing Education Department.
- Takes initiative to identify and act on new opportunities related to continuing education to enhance results and minimize problems.
- Collaborates with other departments on issues related to program responsibilities or overall operation of the organization.
- Identifies and follows up on opportunities and strategies to enhance the continuing education programs offered by the Ohio Nurses Association.
- Submits written reports of departmental activities as requested by the supervisor or designee.
- Studies and evaluates matters relating to continuing education and recommends appropriate action.
- Present at CE events which may require travel and overnight stays.
Continuing Education – ONA Provider Unit
- Functioning as a nurse planner in ONA’s ANCC accredited provider unit, the Nurse Coordinator assesses, plans, implements and evaluates activities, including finding authors or speakers, leading planning meetings, and serving as a planning expert.
- Serving as a content expert as appropriate, will author/update independent studies, record webinars, deliver live presentations.
- Assist the Director of CE in the accredited provider unit program for reporting purposes, including submitting data to ANCC and OBN as required, participating in the provider application process as designated by ANCC, setting goals and evaluating the overall provider unit.
- Ensures CE4Nurses runs effectively and appropriately. Builds courses in CE4Nurses maintaining accreditation standards.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of Ohio Revised Code and Administrative Code 4723 and author/present Category A content.
- Functions as a Nurse Planner of the accredited provider unit.
Continuing Education – OBN Approver Unit
- Orient as a Nurse Peer Reviewer to assist in the processes of the accredited approver unit within six (6) months of employment.
- Serve as a Peer Reviewer for both Individual Applications and Approved Provider Applications as needed.
- Maintain knowledge of OAC 4723-14. Assist the Director of CE in reviewing proposed updates and changes in law that would affect this chapter.
Consultations to Members, the Community, and Interested Parties
- Provides ongoing staff services to members and non-members related to continuing education.
- Participates in Ohio Nurses Association committees as assigned.
- Assists ONA staff in the development of CE programs in the nurse planner role as directed by the Director of Continuing Education.
Communications
- Works with the Director of Communications at the direction of the Director of CE on communication strategies related to continuing education using all forms of media.
- Submits periodic reports summarizing program activity to the Executive Director or Senior Director as requested.
- Ensures that all marketing and public relations communications intended for public release are reviewed by the CE department designee.
- Maintains confidentiality of reports as required by federal and state law or accreditation requirements.
- Contributes to the Ohio Nurse quarterly.
- Contributes to the Ohio Nurse and Health Professionals Review.
Relationship Building
- Serves as ONA representative to other organizations as assigned by the direct supervisor or designee.
- Identifies opportunities to partner with these organizations.
- May be assigned to attend OBN meetings or other non-CE advisory meetings at OBN.
Other Duties
- Participates in staff meetings and other required meetings and seminars.
- Attends and assists in the coordination and preparation of the biennial convention.
- Takes ownership of assigned responsibilities and work product.
- Submits time electronically on a weekly basis.
- Submits credit card statements, if necessary, by the deadlines established.
- Respects computer and laptop service requests and responds timely when action is required.
- Provides information on the intranet calendar when out of the office.
- Maintains documents in a format that makes them readily accessible to other staff in accordance with office policy.
- Travels throughout Ohio and make frequent visits to the Ohio Statehouse. Occasional national travel or overnight trips.

Typical Physical Requirements
- Regularly uses a telephone and e-mail system for communication.
- The person in this position frequently communicates with coworkers and organization contacts who have inquiries. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- The person in this position frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
- Sedentary work – Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequency or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Involves sitting most of the time.

Required Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience, which would likely produce the necessary knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.
- Minimum baccalaureate degree in Nursing
- Unrestricted Ohio RN license
- 4-5 years of experience in continuing education.
- Current Ohio driver’s license.
Work Environment
The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such office environments. Observance of all safety rules and guidelines is imperative and always expected. The employee may be exposed to chemical compounds found in an office environment. The Employee may also be exposed to hazardous household waste.

Starting annual salary of $67,215.33 negotiable based upon experience.
