About the Role
1199SEIU is hiring a temporary, bilingual (English/Spanish) Communications Specialist to support our Home Care organizing for a one-year term. The Communications Specialist will be responsible for ensuring regular and consistent campaign messaging to workers and supporting outreach across the campaign.
This role is essential to maintain a steady flow of communications to our base, build spokesperson capacity among potential Leaders, and support broad outreach efforts. The successful candidate will join a fast-moving campaign team and help shape how our members hear from us, talk about the campaign, and tell their own stories.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and distribute regular campaign communications, including newsletters, announcements, and updates to workers.
- Create, edit, and catalog outreach content – including videos, photos, social posts, member stories, and other digital assets.
- Place Leaders and members into media and public-facing opportunities, including press, "face of campaign" messaging, and contacts with elected officials.
- Train members on spokesperson basics and "telling your story" through regular calls and Zoom sessions.
- Manage and post to organizational social media accounts; monitor engagement and coordinate with the broader communications team.
- Write, edit, and design flyers, literature, press releases, letters to the editor, and paid media.
- Support broad outreach efforts by Strength Organizers, including surveys and online calls to action.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish (written and verbal) required.
- At least one (1) year of communications experience with a progressive political campaign, union, or non-profit organization.
- Demonstrated proficiency managing digital platforms and producing content with Mailchimp, Squarespace, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office.
- Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to take good quality photos and basic video preferred.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
- Excellent team player with the ability to assimilate input from multiple team members.
- Understanding of and commitment to social justice and the Labor Movement.
- Ability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends as the campaign requires.
Schedule & Location
This is an in-person role based in our New York office. The position requires four (4) days in-office and allows one (1) day remote each week.
Compensation
Salary: $91,718.02 annually, plus a competitive benefits package.
