Senior Strategic Researcher

Laborers’ Local 79 is a progressive construction union representing 10,000 members in NYC. Our diverse membership primarily performs general conditions labor on construction sites, demolition and mason tending. The Laborers are a member-led, blue-collar union. We are devoted to organizing new members and believe unionization is key to addressing the economic injustice faced by workers.

Local 79 is seeking a Senior Strategic Researcher to help plan and execute worker organizing campaigns in the construction industry. The Senior Strategic Researcher will work with a team to find opportunities to bring new members into the union, create more jobs for existing members and advocate for the rights of all workers through direct worker organizing, policy and capital strategies campaigns. The ideal candidate will be proficient in crafting and substantiating persuasive narratives that inform campaign action.

Job Duties:

  • Participate in organizing campaigns as a team member, strategist, analyst, and researcher;
  • Take initiative on research seeking opportunities to advance campaigns, finding new data sources, considering new angles of investigation, and finding new ways to analyze and present information;
  • Make strategic recommendations for campaign and policy development based on well-researched evidence;
  • Identify real estate market trends to find opportunities for union growth;
  • Analyze construction project financing, including power mapping key public and private institutional players and determine regulatory requirements of funds;
  • Develop and contribute to reports suitable to various audiences including internal leadership, the general public, media, legislators, etc.;
  • Investigate the corporate structure and regulatory compliance of real estate developers and contractors, work with organizing teams to build critiques and enforcement cases;
  • Interacting with workers to develop their narratives and identify jobsite regulatory infractions;
  • Track real estate development projects through the approval and financing pipeline;
  • Assist in creating tools for workers and organizers to achieve campaign objectives;
  • Manage the schedule and approval process for social media accounts in partnership with the in-house content creation team 
  • Support department functions for internal and external organizing campaigns including member out reach, material production, and union events;
  • Collaborate with other LiUNA departments, affiliates, and stakeholders

Job Qualifications include:

  • Minimum three years of experience in labor / social justice campaigns, specifically strategizing, researching and implementing campaign plans;
  • Understand the regulatory framework of labor, housing, and construction, particularly where transparency and enforcement policy can be used to advance campaigns;
  • Ability to conduct corporate research and track public and private financing;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Proficiency in spreadsheets, data analysis, and a strong ability to perform internet research;
  • Exercise good judgment when dealing with sensitive information
  • Self-motivation combined with an ability to take direction and be part of a team.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish and English a significant plus;
  • Relevant bachelor degree and/or equivalent education preferred; 
  • Curiosity is a must.

Compensation:
$70,000 to $85,000 per year salary, commensurate with experience.
