SEIU Local 121RN, a powerful voice for Registered Nurses and Licensed Professionals in Southern California, is looking for a Field Coordinator to lead a dynamic team of Union Representatives/Internal Organizers. Local 121RN represents more than 11,500 Registered Nurses and Licensed Professionals working in hospitals throughout Los Angeles, Ventura and Riverside counties. Local 121RN is leading the fight to win strong contracts, enact strong workplace protections and strengthen staffing and other important standards for our members.

Role Summary:
Working under the direction of the Field Director, the Field Coordinator is responsible for implementing the organization’s field goals and internal organizing campaigns. In this role, the Field Coordinator will mentor and guide a team of Representatives/Internal Organizers in contract enforcement, member worksite actions, contract campaigns, and engagement on larger social/political issues facing their communities. The Field Coordinator for 121RN must understand healthcare issues, be able to recognize ULPs, give direction on grievance matters and internal actions, support the work of the department, and understand what it takes to lead.

This position reports to the Field Director. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Create strategic plans centered around worksite issues and contract campaigns.
  • Create and facilitate representation and internal organizing-related workshops.
  • Facilitate Steward trainings with ease.
  • Guide and manage a team of Union Reps/Internal Organizers while developing their skills in building field campaigns that align with our strategic organizing efforts.
  • Develop and execute monthly, quarterly, and annual plans.
  • Conduct 1:1 meetings with staff and team meetings to review Rep/Organizer priorities, strategic plans, provide support and assess progress.
  • Develop and manage multiple internal organizing campaigns, often simultaneously, including membership and COPE drives, and various other programs, issue campaigns and contract campaigns.
  • Work with the political team to develop and implement political and COPE plans.
  • Manage programs to recruit and develop stewards, new member leaders, Steward Councils, Worksite Committees, and Contract Action Teams (CAT).
  • Lead and teach effects/impact bargaining.
  • Responsible for leadership development, membership growth and engagement programs.
  • Create a strategic field contract campaign calendar to meet campaign goals and lead the execution of campaigns in collaboration with staff across Union departments.
  • Work with the leadership team and the organizing department to identify residual and new organizing campaign opportunities.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to inspire staff, measure staff performance, create staff development plans, and implement accountability measures for successful campaigns and programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with effective facilitation skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, and the ability to learn and utilize internal organizing software and apps.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A deep passion for social and economic justice issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications: Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Attributes

  • Hands-on experience and in-depth understanding of worker organizing issues and priorities with a minimum of 10 years of internal organizing and representation experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of strategic campaign planning experience and supervision/mentorship of Union Representatives/Internal Organizers.
  • Ability to evaluate and analyze information and deal with conflicting/changing priorities.
  • Ability to perform with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload. 
  • Proven ability to work with diverse groups of people, internally and externally.
  • Self-motivated, great attitude, and strong team player.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
  • Must maintain a current, valid driver’s license, and working automobile, with up-to-date auto insurance. 

Salary and Benefits:
This is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position. The salary range for this position is between $110,000 and 120,000, which will be based on the candidate’s relevant and verifiable professional experience and qualifications. SEIU Local 121RN offers a generous benefit package including medical, dental and vision benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, a 401(K) plan as well as generous holiday and vacation policy.
