Member Representative
Based in Northern Virginia
Status: Full-Time, Exempt, In Person (Field and in Office) Bargaining Unit Position covered by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.
Reports to: Representation Director
Works closely with: Representation Department, Organizing Department
About FCFT
FCFT is a labor union based in Northern Virginia representing the Operational and Instructional workers of Fairfax County Public Schools, including transportation workers, custodians, teachers, counselors, social workers, maintenance and trades staff, food service workers, and clerical staff. We are an organizing union focused on building worker power and engaging the community around well-funded and supported public schools.
Position Summary
The Member Representative serves as a key point of contact for FCFT members by supporting workplace issue resolution, grievance processing, and member advocacy. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate case records, coordinating meetings and communications, assisting with grievance preparation, and ensuring members receive timely, professional support throughout the representation process. The Member Representative works closely with members, school system personnel, and FCFT leadership to address workplace concerns while maintaining strict confidentiality and detailed documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Engages with members regarding questions, concerns, and workplace matters
- Answers member questions via phone call, email, and/or in-person meetings
- Acts as a Weingarten representative
- Prepares and processes grievances
- Interprets and administers the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Collective Bargaining Resolution, and all other relevant regulations and policies
- Follows up with members to ensure issues are appropriately resolved
- Communicates with school system personnel as needed to seek resolution on employee matters
- Inputs and updates case logs, data, notes, and reports related to representation cases
- Reviews and edits case-related documents
- Maintains confidential files and records
- Stays current on federal, state and local labor laws
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Representation Director and Local President
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience in labor relations, employee relations, or a unionized work environment; OR a Bachelor’s degree; OR an apprenticeship program; OR equivalent combination of education and experience to fulfill the responsibilities of the role
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences
- Bilingual Preferred
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as experience with calendaring systems and digital document management
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to accuracy and data management
- Knowledge of collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance procedures strongly preferred
- Familiarity with public school systems, policies, and procedures preferred
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to think strategically and problem-solve effectively
- Ability to work collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Strong research and policy analysis skills
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to exercise sound judgment and initiative
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
- Ability to build trust and maintain strong professional relationships
- Professional demeanor and ability to remain composed under pressure
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to the culture, mission, and values of FCFT
- Valid driver’s license and access to a registered vehicle
- Willingness to work extended or irregular hours as required
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for the position is $60,000 to $65,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid health benefits including medical, dental, and vision; paid time off; phone stipend; and mileage and expense reimbursements. Employees are eligible to participate in the 401(k) retirement plan after six (6) months of employment; the organization will match employee contributions up to 6%.
