SEIU Healthcare Michigan

SEIU Healthcare Michigan

Data Systems Manager / Director

Based in Southfield, MI

Who We Are
SEIU Healthcare Michigan (HCMI) is a labor union representing tens of thousands of long-term care and hospital workers across Michigan. We are part of the two-million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU) — one of the fastest-growing unions in North America. Our work is grounded in the belief that all workers deserve dignity, fair pay, and a voice on the job.

We are a data-driven organization at a pivotal moment. Over the past year we have invested significantly in building out our data infrastructure, and we are now looking for the right person to own it, improve it, and help us use data to better serve our members and advance our mission.

The Opportunity
This is a rare generalist role for someone who is equally comfortable building a data pipeline, troubleshooting a systems issue, managing a team of four, and presenting a dashboard to senior leadership — all in the same week.

The Data Systems Manager is HCMI's primary technical authority. You will own the full data and technology stack: from membership database integrity and cloud data pipelines to general IT function, and staff development. You will also be a culture change agent — helping an organization that is eager but still growing into its data-driven potential.

The person who held this role previously built the department from the ground up. They created infrastructure, set standards, and left good documentation. The incoming manager will inherit a functioning but evolving environment — and will have a genuine opportunity to modernize, automate, and elevate how this organization operates.

What You Will Do
Data & Analytics

  • Maintain the overall integrity and quality of the membership database
  • Own the organization's membership database — ensuring accuracy, integrity, and accessibility of data used by leadership, organizers, and operations staff daily
  • Generate dashboards and exception reports for staff & leadership
  • Manage the full data pipeline from source systems through cloud transformation to executive dashboards — monitor for failures, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve reliability
  • Generate compliance reports and financial reconciliation submissions on recurring schedules — ensuring the organization meets all regulatory and institutional obligations on time
  • Respond to ad hoc data requests from auditors, leadership, and external stakeholders — pulling, formatting, and validating data accurately under deadline pressure
  • Administer organizing campaign databases and support data needs across member engagement, political, and contract campaigns
  • Build and maintain custom scripts and automations that reduce manual effort across the data team's daily workflows
  • Lead the organization's transition to an upgraded membership platform when initiated — serving as primary technical lead for the migration project

Technology & Infrastructure

  • Serve as the organization's IT Coordinator — handling basic tech issues with the support of a tenured IT services company, managing user accounts, security settings, licensing, and configuration for approximately 55 staff
  • Coordinate with the managed IT vendor on device management, endpoint provisioning, and network infrastructure — serving as the internal point of accountability for IT operations
  • Administer the mobile device management program for organization-issued phones
  • Manage the organization's cybersecurity posture: oversee MFA enrollment, monitor domain health and email authentication, implement technology policies, and respond to threats in coordination with the IT vendor
  • Provide technical assistance to users and troubleshoot database-related issues, managing vendor relationships and advocating for necessary fixes or patches.
  • Evaluate the current data stack, identify inefficiencies and redundancies, and bring forward recommendations to leadership with a focus on cost-effectiveness and operational simplicity
  • Identify manual processes that can be automated at low or no additional cost and implement improvements proactively

People & Culture

  • Directly manage a team of four — setting performance standards, conducting regular quality reviews, and supporting individual development
  • Build a team environment rooted in trust, high standards, and psychological safety — particularly important for a team whose work is detail-intensive and often low-visibility
  • Identify and implement Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) improvements continuously.
  • Provide ongoing training and coaching on all data and technological tools.
  • Drive technology adoption across the organization — bringing staff along on new tools and processes through patience, relationship-building, and clear communication rather than mandates
  • Reduce shadow IT and informal workarounds by building systems that staff actually want to use
  • Collaborate with every department to ensure data needs are being bet and data integration is used effectively for campaign success.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for every critical process so that no single person — including yourself — is ever the only one who knows how something works

Who You Are
You bring technical depth across multiple domains

  • Database or CRM administration (3+ years)
  • Advanced Excel / Google Sheets
  • Python scripting and automation
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals
  • SQL for data querying and analysis
  • Mobile device management (MDM)
  • Modern data pipeline tools (DBT, BigQuery, or similar)
  • Cloud data platforms (Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure)
  • Google Workspace or Microsoft 365
  • Database or CRM administration (3+ years)
  • Looker Studio or equivalent BI tools
  • Documentation platforms

You have the soft skills to match

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a small team with varying skill levels and backgrounds
  • Strong communicator — able to translate technical concepts for non-technical leadership and build buy-in for change
  • Patience and charisma to drive culture change in an organization that is not yet fully data-driven
  • Self-directed and comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-moving environments
  • High attention to detail paired with the ability to prioritize strategically under pressure
  • Comfort inheriting and improving an existing technical environment rather than building from scratch
  • You approach ambiguous, messy environments with curiosity rather than frustration

Your mindset sets you apart

  • The best analogy for how we think about this role: we need a data strategist, not just an analyst or technician. We need someone who asks why the data looks the way it does, digs until they understand the system underneath, and builds solutions that hold up over time — not just today. If you see a messy spreadsheet and feel the urge to understand the problem it was trying to solve before you fix it, you are probably the right person for this job.

Preferred Background

  • Experience working in a labor union, non-profit, advocacy organization, or other mission-driven environment
  • Familiarity with membership databases, constituent relationship management (CRM) systems, or organizing data platforms
  • Experience managing a data or technology function in a small to mid-sized organization where you wore many hats
  • Background in data engineering, General IT, or a hybrid of both
  • Demonstrated track record of reducing manual processes through automation

Prior union or labor movement experience is a plus — but not required. We will invest in helping the right person understand our world.

  • A mission-driven work environment where your technical contributions directly support working people
  • A team that is invested in your success and a leadership team that values and protects the data function
