Salary Range:
$102,857 – $154,291

This position is responsible for developing and executing strategic communication plans across AFSCME’s field campaigns. This includes coordinating communications operations, driving programs, ensuring alignment of resources, setting achievable timelines and working with field and affiliate communicators to ensure message consistency.

DUTIES:

  • Coordinates and drives communications for field campaigns, including organizing, political and contract campaigns outside the scope of the regional structure.
  • Works with internal teams and campaign leadership to develop and maintain communications plans and editorial calendars for priority campaigns, aligning messaging, content, and timing across channels.
  • Advises the Assistant Director on staffing and other workplace issues with respect to field campaigns.
  • Works with field communicators and affiliate communications staff to coordinate campaign resources and tools, messaging, and content across channels. 
  • Coordinates dissemination and training on AFSCME’s digital toolkit, content sharing center, Union Hall and other tools developed to build capacity and assist AFSCME affiliates and field campaigns. 
  • Develops and works with affiliates and field communicators to coordinate digital campaigns and tools, including social media campaigns, mobile campaigns, advertising and editorial support.
  • Collaborate with affiliates to create landing pages to optimize user experience and collect data.
  • Monitor, analyze and report back on key campaigns to stakeholders and internal team throughout the process, using insights to inform ongoing communications planning and execution.
  • Assist both IU field communications staff and affiliates with campaign messaging and strategy development and helps translate campaign goals into coordinated communications plans.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.

REQUIREMENTS: 
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in journalism, English, communications or public policy and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in labor, political or community organizing campaigns and advocacy communications, including five (5) years of communications and campaign experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities: 

Skills:

  • Experience running multi-channel digital campaigns and knowledge of digital media platforms including web content management systems, email tools, social media, etc. 
  • Ability to craft messages that are based on the AFSCME story and research and to tailor those messages for different audiences and channels.
  • Ability to evaluate the success of a digital campaign by compiling and reviewing analytics.
  • Experience in the production of leaflets, brochures, direct mail pieces, videos, web and social media content and other assets, preferably within a labor union or advocacy organization. 
  • Experience using a Customer Relationship Management system for email campaigns (e.g. Action Network, Salesforce, Constant Contact, Mailchimp). 
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS), such as WordPress or Drupal. 
  • Experience with texting platforms, such as Mobile Commons (SMS) or Scale to Win (peer-to-peer).
  • Demonstrated understanding of AFSCME related programs and/or labor issues and initiatives that permit effective information distribution. 
  • Strong relationship building skills and advanced ability to develop strategic communications campaign plans. 
  • Advanced ability to develop and lead projects and operationalize strategic communications campaign plans.
  • Ability to use initiative to execute projects that may be vaguely defined.
  • Advanced understanding of AFSCME and union programs and initiatives. 
  • Ability to set priorities, work under pressure, handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet established deadlines.
  • Must thrive in an environment with tight deadlines, high-pressure, lots of travel and irregular hours.
  • Requires a high level of judgment and ability to take initiative and work independently. 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills. 
  • Strong presentation and platform skills.

Travel and work hours:

  • Extensive travel, extended work hours, including weekends may be required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
