Staff Organizer

The Temple Association of University Professionals (TAUP - AFT Local 4531) seeks a part-time Staff Organizer. The position will work with our staff and officers in building power amongst the 2,600 faculty, librarians, and academic professionals in our union. They will work in collaboration with the full-time staff organizer to accomplish strategic goals set out by the officers and executive committee. Job description in GUILD CBA: Staff Organizer
The SO is responsible for membership and organizing efforts in the union. This includes building relationships with workers, developing issue-based organizing plans for significant areas, recruiting activists, sustaining activists in the organization, and recruiting new members to the union. The SO is also responsible for making site visits, spearheading member engagement initiatives, and planning as well as carrying out and assessing organizing campaigns. The SO reports directly to the VP of Organizing.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Member recruitment,
  • Identifying and developing union activists and leaders,
  • Facilitating trainings,
  • Completing office visits,
  • Holding one-on-ones with members,
  • Coordinating with workers to gather information,
  • Assisting in building infrastructure to expand the democratic reach of the union, and
  • Gathering and recording data on interactions with members and potential members

The compensation for this position is $25 an hour for approximately 10 hours per week. All TAUP staff report to the union President. The Staff Organizer will report directly to the VP of Organizing. This position is 100% in person, on Temple’s campus. Work hours are flexible but typically between 9 and 5, Monday through Friday.

Knowledge and Experience
Requires a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relational organizing. Preference for those with experience working in organized labor, especially in higher education labor. Also requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy. Must have experience with the Google Suite. Knowledge of Airtable is desired but not required.
