Field Organizer

The Western Massachusetts Area Labor Federation is a coalition of local unions throughout western Massachusetts committed to building power for working people. We coordinate communications, mobilize for action, and build political and workplace power among affiliates and labor allies. We mobilize around the legislative, political, organizing, and solidarity goals of the labor movement locally, statewide, and nationally.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Western Mass Area Labor Federation is seeking a full-time Field Organizer, to coordinate the work of union leaders and delegates and to implement the strategic organizing goals of the regional labor movement. Successful candidates for this work will be highly driven and committed to our mission, with skills including:

  • Work under the direction of an elected board of union representatives to build power and implement the strategic priorities of the Western Mass Area Labor Federation
  • Grow union member participation, union affiliation, and relationships with allied organizations in the Western Mass labor movement
  • Plan and organize solidarity actions for area labor struggles
  • Maintain a member-led political program, implement a member-led candidate endorsement process, organize to support key local, state, and federal labor legislation, and coordinate GOTV programs for endorsed candidates.
  • Build, maintain, and participate in local labor coalitions to organize collectively around shared goals
  • Implement strategic planning processes and develop campaigns
  • Maintain day-to-day online communications through social media and websites
  • Conduct one-on-one conversations and effectively move members to collective action
  • Assist the WMALF Administrative Assistant to maintain updated records of union affiliates, delegates, policy and procedures, and financials.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 1-3 year of experience in the labor movement
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic, racial and social justice
  • Demonstrated ability to work in diverse coalitions
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to move workers to collective action
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends (with comp time to offset weekend work)
  • Knowledge of the labor movement, organizing skills, and bargaining
  • Capacity to work independently and within the context of a work plan
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including experience with social media and online tools
  • Effective time-management and organizational skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, continuous use of a safe working vehicle, automobile liability insurance, and be willing to travel throughout the organization’s jurisdiction on a regular basis. Occasional travel to other parts of the state and/or out-of-state may be necessary.
  • Must live in the jurisdiction of the organization—between Worcester and the western border of Massachusetts

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Familiarity with Western Massachusetts’ political landscape
  • Fundraising and grant writing experience
  • Some Spanish skills

Compensation: Starting salary of approximately $50,000 + Excellent benefits
