Position – Leverage Researcher in USW Strategic Campaigns department
Location - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The United Steelworkers, the nation’s largest industrial Union, seeks innovative and energetic individuals from varying backgrounds who are interested in working on strategic campaigns in a fast-paced environment.

The USW Strategic Campaigns Department is responsible for the development and coordination of membership mobilization programs to support bargaining and strategic initiatives. The campaigns vary – from small scale, local union driven contract campaigns to heavily resourced corporate campaigns at multiple locations across the country.

This position involves:

  • Conducting in-depth leverage research on employers and targets – including publicly-traded companies, private companies, non-profits, local governments and government procurement and contracts
  • Preparing reports on corporate, industry, policy and economic research to support union campaigns
  • Providing analysis of research findings, developing campaign strategies and identifying opportunities for campaign tactics that impact key targets
  • Creating written material to support contract and corporate campaigns including white papers, leaflets, reports, etc. in a fast-paced environment
  • Working with both union staff and rank-and-file members in a variety of sectors to develop and implement creative strategies and tactics
  • Coordinating events and meetings with union members, partners and staff
  • Identifying potential allies and engaging effectively


  • Ability to conduct extensive leverage research on varied targets
  • Strong analytical research and communication skills
  • Ability to quickly develop written materials (i.e. newsletters, handbills, reports, letters)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coworkers and local union leaders
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in the labor movement, or equivalent, and a commitment to fighting for justice for workers
  • Candidates should be self-motivated and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Occasional travel required
  • Some evening hours and occasional weekend hours required
  • Experience with capital strategies and/or financial analysis a plus
  • Proficiency in another language a plus

Salary - Salary range is $68,000 to $105,000, with placement on the range commensurate with experience and education. This is a bargaining unit position. Generous benefits including health care and retirement benefits provided by employer.
