Labor/Community Coalition Organizer

The Schools Our Students Deserve Coalition is composed of organizations and individuals who are committed to advancing education, social, racial, and economic justice in the San Antonio Independent School District and the greater San Antonio community. The coalition is seeking a dynamic and passionate Labor/Community Coalition Organizer to work with coalition partners to continue to build parent, student, and community engagement in support of The Schools Our Students Deserve platform.  

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Consistent (weekly) community outreach and base-building responsibilities, including but not limited to canvassing/door-knocking; phone banking, text banking, reaching out to social media contacts, etc.
  • Arrange for and prepare community leaders to lead community meetings, actions and events
  • Develop an outreach campaign to connect union households in SAISD to the ongoing work of the coalition
  • Identify and develop member leaders through one-on-ones and other forms of member engagement.
  • Consistently track and input data regarding outreach (training provided)
  • Conduct regular outreach to build awareness and increase member participation in coalition campaigns
  • Network with other groups that are organizing around public education and social, racial, and economic justice
  • Plan and execute a one-day public education community summit under the direction of Our Schools and Coalition Steering Committee

Job Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience as an organizer in a union or social justice movement setting
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic campaigns
  • Commitment to social change and to carrying out the vision and program of the organization
  • Demonstrate a commitment to solidarity in professional interactions  
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess strong listening, written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking, problem solving and planning skills
  • Be well-organized, self-motivated, with demonstrated initiative and commitment
  • Possess strong teamwork and leadership skills and ability to train and develop others
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines
  • Possess ability to navigate complex organizations, resolve conflicts and work effectively in high pressure environments
  • Demonstrate proficiency in database software, G-Suite, and other computer programs
  • Demonstrate strong organizational commitment and understanding of our labor union and social movement values
  • Be able to work irregular, often long, hours
  • Be willing and able to travel throughout the San Antonio ISD community
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) required
  • Valid driver’s license and insured car

Compensation: The salary range is from $48,000 to $50,000 depending on experience. This is a 1-year grant funded position.
