Director of Communications

Based in Chicago, IL

 

The Illinois Council of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is currently seeking candidates for the position of Director of Communications. AFSCME Council 31 is a statewide labor organization with nearly 300 affiliated local unions representing 75,000 public service workers in a wide variety of fields—including health care, public works, public safety, education and human services. Council 31 has a strong tradition of progressive, democratic trade unionism and plays an active role in the political, legislative and policy arenas.

The Director of Communications is responsible for conducting research, as well as developing and implementing communication strategies, especially utilizing new media platforms, to advance bargaining, legislative, organizing and other priority campaigns. Works collaboratively with other research and communications staff to analyze critical issues, increase member communications, expand social media presence, and support publication of Council 31’s bi-monthly newspaper. Fosters efforts to enhance awareness of AFSCME initiatives and priorities and to strengthen the union’s public profile as a major force working to improve the lives of working families. Position based in Chicago.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as editor of the union’s bi-monthly publication, On the Move;
  • Conducts interviews, gathers photos, and drafts articles for the paper.
  • Advances member and community communications by developing leaflets, brochures, direct mail, videos and other materials;
  • Writes clear and compelling messages to drive member engagement;
  • Helps to maintain strong and timely presence on Council 31 website, FB page and other social media platforms;
  • Aids in developing and executing earned and paid media efforts, including conceiving and holding events such as press conferences and actions;
  • Assists in developing and implementing comprehensive digital campaigns that engage both members and potential members and utilize gamut of channels;
  • Contributes creatively to message framing, audience targeting, and campaign planning;

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the labor movement;
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with other staff;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion;
  • Well-organized, thorough and attentive to details;
  • Demonstrated ability to research and write on deadline;
  • Strong analytic skills;
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write quickly and clearly;
  • Ability to create leaflets, brochures, direct mail pieces, video scripts and other materials;
  • Knowledge of design and video editing tools;
  • Working knowledge of major social media platforms;
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, policy analysis or related field.
