Local Organizer

Must be based in the Charlotte, NC area
(with local travel)

 

Overview of Responsibilities:
The Local Organizer will be employed by the Charlotte-Metrolina Labor Council and will work with the labor council, local union affiliates, and the NC State AFL-CIO to ensure local union members are being mobilized, particularly within their workplaces. The Local Organizer is responsible for working with national AFL-CIO staff, federation bodies, and affiliates to build a worksite organizing program that will allow local unions to execute year-round issue education and mobilization with their members. This position will be in a national cohort of local organizers who will all be working towards a goal of building an organizing approach for legislative and electoral programs through 2024. The Local Organizer must be based in the Charlotte, NC area.

Description of duties:

  1. Identify and map the local unions that represent 70% of membership in the respective CLC jurisdictions (affiliate and non-affiliate).
  2. In collaboration with the State Federation and/or Central Labor Council (Area Labor Federation) conduct one-on-one leadership meetings with local union leaders to discuss the year-round organizing approach and achieve their buy-in and support.
  3. Secure local union points of contact (Local Union Coordinators) for every local union within the geographic jurisdiction.
  4. Get agreement from local union leaders that they will communicate, educate, organize, and mobilize their union members utilizing their local union infrastructure.
  5. Work with each local union leader to identify and map all the local’s worksites and stewards.
  6. Establish regular worksite mobilization program commitments with local unions.
  7. Work with the local union leader and the trainer assigned to the respective CLC jurisdiction to schedule organizing conversation trainings for stewards.
  8. Work with designated trainers and local union leaders to identify training location(s).
  9. Responsible for providing regular updates on progress of the worksite organizing program, including detailed analytics and weekly and potentially daily numeric reports, as well as entering data into various databases.
  10. Research, develop and implement strategic industry specific plans to increase local union membership.
  11. Help build awareness of the local union movement through some community outreach such as leafleting and tabling at community events.
  12. Work with the political committee to track local political issues and support the labor council in accountability actions.
  13. Assist labor council in planning and implementing social events for solidarity building amongst affiliated unions and their members.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Labor Studies or Political Science helpful.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in labor or community organizing.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of legislative or electoral campaign experience, including as a lead within the field as well as national campaign experience.
  • Familiarity with and experience working with the field campaigns of the national or local unions, including expertise in union organizing, issue, electoral and community/union mobilization.
  • Demonstrated successful ability to develop and implement organizing campaign plans.
  • Capable of working independently as well as part of a team in both a lead and a mentor role.
  • Demonstrated ability to make professional and persuasive presentations and to meaningfully engage a wide range of diverse audiences including different labor groups and community allies.
  • Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to accept feedback and to provide feedback effectively and with sensitivity.
  • Proficient in use of various databases and other technology tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse range of co-workers, leaders, and organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive environments.
  • Ability to travel locally and frequently in performance of the duty of the job.
  • Must have own transportation and the ability to travel to a variety of local and state-wide locations
  • Ability to work long and extended hours.
  • A spirit of creativity and innovation in developing programs.
  • Must be a team player as well as able to take own initiative.
