ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
Centro de Trabajadores Unidos: United Workers’ Center (CTU) is a grassroots community organization & worker center based on the Southeast Side of Chicago and South Suburbs that was founded in 2008 after a group of immigrant workers organized against unfair labor practices at a local factory. CTU strives to build power among low wage workers and advance systemic change to stabilize low-income immigrant communities and communities of color. CTU works at the intersection of immigration and labor & employs a grassroots, community organizing model to advance social, economic and racial justice by addressing the root causes.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Centro de Trabajadores Unidos—United Workers’ Center (CTU) seeks a full-time Senior Immigration Organizer. This position is salaried with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois health insurance, workers' compensation insurance, and generous benefits including paid vacation and paid sick leave. This position has a 6-month probation period. Until further notice, CTU is working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to lead the development and implementation of immigration organizing vision, strategies, and campaigns. They will be committed to developing strong relationships with immigrant members, primarily low-wage workers, to build power and leadership, and develop and implement immigration campaigns that advance social, economic and racial justice. They will lead CTU representation and participation in immigration coalitions and policy advocacy to advance CTU immigrant organizing priorities. The Senior Immigration Organizer reports to the Associate Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizing

  • Lead the development and implementation of CTU immigration organizing vision, strategy, and campaigns.
  • Supervise the Immigration Organizer(s).
  • Collaborate with CTU organizing teams (labor, education, and economic justice) to coordinate immigration campaign strategy, strengthen CTU organizing initiatives, and develop and implement membership and organizational leadership activities.
  • Lead and manage CTU participation and relationships in immigration coalitions.
  • Lead development and implementation of CTU immigration policy advocacy.
  • Lead the Immigration Organizing team in the following:
  • Recruit, build, and sustain a strong worker-member base.
  • Cultivate and support the leadership of CTU membership through training and practice, developed in collaboration with member-leaders and CTU organizing teams.
  • Work closely with CTU organizing teams and member-leaders to develop and implement strategic campaigns to address unjust immigration enforcement practices and change immigration policy.
  • Work closely with CTU organizing teams to coordinate and facilitate biweekly bilingual membership orientations & regular meetings among the member base to educate community members about their immigration rights.
  • Work closely with CTU organizing teams to manage training and staffing to ensure coverage of CTU community office hours.
  • Coordinate appropriate Legal Clinic follow up on immigration cases.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with key allies, community organizations, religious institutions, and community leaders.
  • Educate and mobilize CTU membership base on immigration-related coalition campaigns.
  • Work closely with CTU organizing teams to increase membership engagement.
  • Maintain and update all relevant databases & reporting systems.

Management

  • In collaboration with the Associate Director, ensure the Immigration Organizing Team has the resources and competencies necessary to serve low-income immigrant residents of southeast Chicago and area suburbs.
  • In collaboration with CTU organizing teams, lead the Immigration Organizing team in support of the development and implementation of labor, education, and economic justice organizing campaigns.
  • Remain informed and responsive in strategy and communications regarding immigration policy and regulatory developments.
  • Represent CTU at conferences, coalitions, campaign events & other public venues.
  • Attend Centro de Trabajadores Unidos weekly staff meetings, membership meetings, and other organizational meetings, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to collaborative development and implementation of organizational fundraising initiatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
We’re seeking candidates who excel in relationship-building, are self-motivated, and have strong organizing and management skills. You should have:

  • Two or more years of experience in immigration organizing, including base-building, mobilization, participatory political education, and community-led programming and campaigns.
  • One or more years of supervisory experience.
  • One or more years of policy advocacy experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, economic & racial justice and immigrant communities, including low-wage workers of color.
  • Experience with immigrants’ rights. Familiar with or willing to learn about Chicago/Illinois immigration policy.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English, to include excellent written/verbal communication ability and ability to interpret/translate.
  • A commitment to problem solving, with innovative, creative and strong interpersonal, time management, planning, and communications skills.
  • Technology proficiency.
  • Reliable transportation.
