Location: South Florida or Chicago area in Illinois

We are a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing over 20,000 resident physicians who are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities. Job Summary:
The Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU Healthcare is looking for an Area Director responsible for hospitals located in Miami, Florida and Chicago, Illinois. This position reports to the National Field Director.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Regional Directors on workflow in order to accomplish Regional goals
  • Oversee the engagement of members on hospital and CIR issues
  • Work in collaboration with Regional Directors and Regional Vice Presidents
  • Directly supervise Organizers within the assigned region
  • Evaluate staff performance
  • Supervise employees with responsibility for their training and development
  • Approve expenses, time off, and other administrative functions for the staff
  • Liaise with other CIR departments to support Organizer’s needs
  • Participate in collective bargaining when needed
  • Support Organizers with contract negotiations and enforcement
  • Develop strategic relationships within assigned hospitals and the community
  • May or may not provide additional contract organizing support with assigned turf as needed for the area

Requirements and Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and expertise in: engaging members on hospital/CIR issues, identifying and building strong member leaders, developing relationships with hospital administrators, community allies and government officials and contract negotiations
  • Understands resident life/training, hospital operations and finance and relevant economic, and political issues
  • Understands the collective bargaining process and enforcement; ability to engage and move bargaining committees
  • Familiarity with labor law (in local jurisdictions), libel/free speech laws, major laws related to health care industry and collective bargaining, unfair labor practices, mediation and arbitration processes
  • Demonstrates an interest in the work and the membership
  • Desire and commitment to advance the organization
  • Proactively identifies needs of the organization and responds with solutions
  • Demonstrates respectful and responsible behavior
  • Strong planning and time management skills, ability to develop work plans with minimal supervision including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks

  • Appropriately and effectively utilizes the expertise and resources of other CIR departments
  • Ability to critically evaluate one’s own performance, and incorporate feedback into improving performance
  • Provides support, modeling, and coaching to staff through honest, clear, and timely feedback; able to facilitate the learning of others, both formally and informally
  • Actively and effectively develops the skills and autonomy of staff to meet organizational needs and individual staff’s professional goals
  • Ability to think critically through problems
  • Fluency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Suite; (docs, sheets, slides, and drive)
  • Technologically proficient; willingness to learn new operating platforms to make hybrid organizing work with remote teams effective

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 4-year degree, BA/BS, preferred; but not required
  • Minimum 2 years relevant organizing experience
  • Supervisory experience of unionized staff preferred and /or commitment to managing with the values of the labor movement; willingness to constantly improve as a manager;
  • Ability to manage conflict and adversarial situations
  • Ability to build and manage professional relationships
  • Ability to work long hours
  • Ability to work in the field at a hospital worksite to accomplish tasks and meet with individuals
  • Ability to travel to worksites in Miami and Chicago
  • Must have a valid driver's license

CIR Offers:

  • This is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position. The salary range for this position is ($90,000 to $103,000) which is based on the candidate’s relevant and verifiable professional experience and qualifications.
