The Congressional Progressive Caucus Center is seeking a highly experienced, strategic, and motivated candidate to fill the position of Communications Director.

Position Description
The Congressional Progressive Caucus Center seeks a Communications Director to lead the Center’s communications and overall media strategy, including creating strategic, targeted written content and communications tools on priority issues for the CPC Center and the broader community to help drive a policy agenda.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Executive Director and serves as part of the management team.
  • Supervises one employee, a Digital Communications Associate and sometimes additional contractors, fellows or interns.
  • Develops, leads, oversees and implements the organization’s strategic communication plan.
  • Writes compelling press releases, emails, op eds, and blog posts that communicate the Center’s policy work to a wide audience.
  • Generates compelling stories to pitch to the media.
  • Develops and maintains the Center’s brand identity and communications best practices.
  • Manages and oversees all digital platforms including the website, graphics, strategic email outreach, and social media, as well as overseeing any video editing and production.
  • Responsible for final copy editing, design, production and publication of final work product.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key reporters and editors at top-tier and influential media outlets.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key communications teams in partner organizations.
  • Works in partnership with the Development Director to support the Center’s fundraising efforts, including the development of promotional and fundraising materials.
  • Works in partnership with the Policy Director and the Legislative Affairs Director to develop materials that amplify the CPC Center policy work.
  • Works in partnership with the Organizing Director and Policy Director to plan press conferences, briefings, and other high-profile public events.
  • Provides media training to Center staff, as needed.
  • Assists with activities related to the Center’s annual Summit, including promotional work, and designing and disseminating conference agendas and collateral materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least 8 to 10 years of relevant experience working as a communications professional for nonprofits, government, issue campaigns, and/or political campaigns.
  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • The ability to digest and communicate policy content and work effectively with policy and legislative affairs staff.
  • Understanding and ability to communicate proficiently on a wide range of social policy and legislative issues.
  • A demonstrated commitment to and experience working in the areas of racial justice, social justice, and people-centered policies.
  • Experience crafting, leading and implementing a strategic communications plan.
  • Experience telling sensitive, complex and personal stories in a respectful, strength-based and ethical manner.
  • Experience developing and executing advocacy communications strategies designed to support and promote organizational and policy goals.
  • Experience crafting narrative-change campaigns including using polling or research to understand and build successful messaging campaigns.
  • Strong experience working with the national and local media: print, broadcast, digital, and social.
  • Experience managing digital strategy and social media channels.
  • Strong writing skills with excellent grammar.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills; attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines with a commitment to quality.
  • Ability to distill complex issues into effective communications materials for diverse target audiences.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining focus on high-level organizational goals.
  • Collaborative work style.
  • Commitment to centering anti-racism and equity in your work.
  • Established DC-area media contacts in non-profits and with journalists, editors, podcasters and media influencers.

Salary Range
$90,000 – $100,000, depending on experience

Location
This position is remote until the CPC Center’s office is able to reopen. At that time, this position will be based in our Washington, DC office.
