Founded in 1993, LAANE is a leading advocacy organization dedicated to building a new economy for all – with a focus on women, low-income communities, and people of color. Combining dynamic research, innovative public policy, and deep coalition organizing, LAANE promotes an economic approach based on good jobs, thriving communities, and a healthy environment. Our work has included raising the minimum wage in 5 L.A. cities, overhauling our waste and recycling system to hold corporations accountable, and creating good, green jobs at LADWP. Campaign Description: LAANE is currently seeking a full-time Community Organizer for our Long Beach Project, and it’s civic engagement initiative, Long Beach Rising. Founded in 2007, our work has largely focused on making tangible improvements in the lives of workers throughout the City of Long Beach, particularly in the Long Beach Hospitality sector. We’ve organized and won critical victories to raise wages, standards, and protections for hotel workers at the ballot box. We have also made substantive policy changes around minimum wage, paid sick days, worker retention and recall, short term rental regulation, as well as solidarity work in support of housing, tenant and immigrant community rights. We founded Long Beach Rising to develop new organizers and leaders we can integrate into our campaign work. More recently, our campaign has played a critical role in the work to try and pass Proposition 15. Moving forward, our Project will focus on deepening our civic engagement work by building a network of community leaders to engage on issue campaign priorities year-round in between election cycles.

Position Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Project Director, the Community Organizer will be responsible for carrying out our civic engagement initiatives, grassroots power building strategies, and mobilization on key worker related policy fights. This will include the meaningful engagement of existing allies and partners as well as the cultivation of new stakeholders and community leaders. We are seeking a qualified professional who will be able to work well with unions, community organizations, public agencies and elected officials. Additional responsibilities will include supervising interns, program and training development, as well as legislative advocacy as needed. The Community Organizer will also work directly with the LAANE Communications Associate assigned to our Project. Reliable transportation is required.

  • Cultural competency and social justice values/work experience: A strong commitment to racial and economic justice and the labor movement; cultural humility and mindfulness; knowledge of Long Beach specific challenges is a plus, fluency in Spanish is ideal.
  • Excellent organizing strategy and campaign planning skills: Experience (2-5+ years) doing community and/or labor organizing, experience working with diverse communities (especially Black and/or Latinx communities) and a multi-racial coalition, working well under deadlines and pressure, detail-oriented, and methodical. Willingness to work longer hours and weekends when necessary. An understanding of civic engagement campaigns is a plus.
  • Working as a leader within a team: Ability to work independently and collectively within a team, well organized, think proactively, possession of strong interpersonal communication skills, and emotional intelligence.

Terms of Employment: LAANE’s salary and benefits standards are competitive, with a starting salary of $58,240. Full family health benefits, 401(k), generous time off, subsidized Transit Access Pass, commitment to work/life balance, parking. Friendly, team-oriented working environment.
