Worker Rights Attorney
Southern California

Based in Ontario or Los Angeles, CA
(covering Southern California)

Worksafe is seeking a full-time junior-level Attorney to work with us on an initiative to advance the rights and job security of temporary and contingent workers.

ABOUT US: Worksafe is a California-based legal aid organization that advocates for the basic right of all workers to a safe and healthy workplace. We engage in campaigns in coalition with worker organizations and activist networks to advocate for protective worker health and safety laws and effective remedies for injured workers.

In addition to advocacy and policy work, we support legal aid and worker rights organizations whose clients encounter workplace health or safety issues, workplace injuries, or retaliation for reporting unsafe work. We provide legal training, technical assistance, and advocacy support to legal aid programs who serve low-wage and immigrant workers, improving access to justice for the state’s most vulnerable workers.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The attorney will staff Worksafe’s “California Alliance for Secure Employment” Project (“Project”) in the Riverside/San Bernardino/Ontario and Los Angeles areas and will provide support to legal aid organizations throughout Southern California on occupational safety and health (“OSH”) issues. The goals of the project are to incorporate policy and legal advocacy with worker empowerment strategies to support and promote the economic stabilization of low income and vulnerable workers, with an emphasis on temporary and contingent workers. The attorney will be located at the Warehouse Worker Resource Center (WWRC) in Ontario, California and in Los Angeles at a site to be determined.

The attorney will need to be or become familiar with OSH laws and standards, related scientific and technical issues, workers’ compensation law, and other areas of labor and employment law in order to provide legal and strategic advice. Worksafe will provide support and professional development in the requisite legal practice areas.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Coalition Building: The attorney will facilitate and lead efforts in the coalition affiliated with the Project, including supporting worker organizing efforts of WWRC and other coalition partners.
  • Resource Development: The attorney will develop written and multimedia resources, including practice guides and training materials, where needed.
  • Policy Advocacy: The attorney will engage in regulatory and legislative policy work to support the Project and Worksafe’s mission of safe and secure work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
