State Economic Analyst – EARN Team

The Economic Policy Institute seeks a dynamic and skilled person to join our Economic Analysis and Research Network (EARN) team as a State Economic Analyst. The analyst will support EARN’s programs and policy campaigns by conducting original research, analyzing state and national economic data, and providing research guidance, customized data products, and technical assistance to EARN state partners. The analyst will also conduct research in support of EPI’s broader institutional priorities. We are seeking someone with 3 to 5 years’ experience writing, researching, and using data to analyze public policy and the economy. Experience working on economic justice campaigns or using data in support of policies to support working families is a plus. This position is located in Washington, D.C.

What You Will Do

  • Conduct research and analysis in support of EARN programs and campaigns:
    • Collect and analyze data using statistical software showing the impact of public policies on working families and the economy.
    • Develop and maintain state-level data packages and tools for EARN state groups.
    • Produce literature reviews, resource packets, written reports, fact sheets, op-eds, blog posts, and other documents on key economic issues and policies, such as minimum wages, economic development, collective bargaining, structural racism, and gender-pay inequities.
  • Support EARN state partners in their research and policy work:
    • Respond to technical assistance requests, particularly on research, economic, and data-related questions.
    • Produce custom statistics and data sets.
    • Review EARN member reports and products.
    • Assist in developing and providing training opportunities for EARN members, including webinars and EARN conference training sessions.
  • Develop fluency on key EARN issue areas, monitoring relevant research and emerging trends in state and local policymaking.
  • Engage in public debates, policy advocacy, and public education through conference presentations, briefings, expert testimony, and responding to media inquiries.
  • Write, edit, and contribute to EPI and EARN reports, issue briefs, fact sheets, snapshots, blog posts, and interactive online content.
  • Assist in the management of EARN’s online resources, including the EARN website and listserv.
  • Assist in planning and staffing EARNCon, EARN’s annual conference for state partners and allies, particularly in developing the data and skills training curriculum.

Who You Are
We are seeking a candidate with the following qualities and experience:

  • At least 3 years’ relevant experience preferred.
  • A masters or professional degree in economics, public policy, or a related field is preferred. Applicants should have a strong statistics competency and understanding of econometric techniques.
  • Experience with and demonstrated commitment to economic justice and racial and gender equity, such as in a labor union, advocacy organization or public agency.
  • Training and experience with analysis of microdata, including the use of statistical software such as SAS, Stata, or R.
  • Experience with policy research and advocacy; familiarity with state-level policy and legislative process is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to create materials for a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to represent the organization at meetings and events, as well as with the media and in testimony before state and local government.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, but also able to collaborate and work as part of a team and with diverse partners.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to drive projects to completion.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and strong expertise in Excel. Knowledge of WordPress a bonus.
  • Commitment to excellence and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Willingness to handle occasional long hours and travel.


  • EPI is a unionized workplace. This position is in the bargaining unit and reports to the EARN Director.
  • The salary for this position ranges from $75,000 to $85,000, dependent on experience, plus benefits.
