Research Intern

Based in Silver Spring, MD

The Amalgamated Transit Union’s Collective Bargaining Department is a seeking a full-time summer Research Intern to assist with conducting strategic research on behalf of the union’s bargaining campaigns. The Research Intern will be responsible for conducting corporate research on major transit contractors, organizing the department’s digital resources, and working with staff to develop collective bargaining strategy.


  • Graduate of or currently enrolled in a degree granting institution
  • Commitment to the mission of labor unions and social justice organizations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with computer-based research tools including databases
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior union or social advocacy experience a plus

Primary Responsibilities

  • Researching revenue agreements and request for proposals (RFPs) between public transit agencies and contractors
  • Assessing relevancy of documents and uploading them to the department’s research database

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Managing the research department’s transit system databases
  • Submitting Freedom of Information Act requests as needed by the department
  • Conducting corporate research on major transit contractors
  • Researching new and emerging transportation trends (ride hailing, AVs, mobility on demand)
  • Collaborating with collective department staff to develop bargaining strategy
  • Assisting with industry research and data collection

The Research Department intern will be paid $20 per hour. The duration of the internship is flexible. The intern will be expected to work a 35-hour work week at the ATU’s office in Silver Spring, Maryland.
