Campaigns Director
Political, Legislative, Organizing, and Community Outreach Programs

Based in Atlanta, GA


The Georgia AFL-CIO is seeking a Campaigns Director to guide their Political, Legislative, Organizing and Community Outreach programs through 2020. The Georgia AFL-CIO is the largest labor body in the State of Georgia, representing over 300,000 Union members and householders.

Campaigns Director
Overall, the Campaigns Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the Georgia AFL-CIO’s campaigns while also working with its affiliated unions to further the goals of the Labor movement in Georgia. Below the required and preferred skills are listed by topic.

This job and its responsibilities are constantly changing to meet the needs of the Labor movements and Union members across the state and the country.

Labor Experience
A candidate for this position is expected to have general knowledge of the AFL-CIO, its affiliates, structure and endorsement process. This person would also have the ability to understand the needs and capacity of local unions.

Campaigns
A candidate for this position must have the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  1. General Campaign Management, with experience in running at least one general election campaign at a State House District level or above (whether through a political party or Independent Expenditure).
  2. Campaign Planning and Execution
    • The ability to plan a campaign with the ability to calculate and plan:
    • Win numbers
    • Goal setting and turnout needs
    • Shift goals/knock and call goals/conversations goals
    • The ability to plan for, and execute, district and precinct prioritization
  3. The ability to create and work with an operating budget
  4. A general understanding of legal definitions and compliance guidelines around coordinated campaigns and Independent Expenditures.

Field
A candidate for this position must have the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Experience in fieldwork with a campaign.
  • Understanding of how to canvass and phonebank voters
  • Proficiency in Minivan

Data Management
A candidate for this position must have the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Proficiency in the LAN/VAN
  • Pulling lists for analysis
  • Using Counts and Crosstabs
  • Using the LAN for canvass turf, phone banks and mailings
  • Pulling data for reports
  • Building searches using basic targeting
  • Basic Excel

Legislative Experience
A candidate for this position must have some experience working on legislative issue campaigns. A preferred candidate for this position would have the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Policy analysis experience
  • Knowledge of how the Georgia General Assembly works, with the ability to track bills through the legislative process.
  • Experience lobbying at the Georgia General Assembly
  • Creating and Managing Call to Actions through mass e-mailing program and social media

A preferred candidate for this position would have the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Script writing
  • Message development
  • Campaign structure development and staff management
  • Staff recruitment
  • Equipment management
  • Experience in creating Direct Mail
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • The ability to work with Communications staff on goals for a campaign.

General Skills and Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Docs
  • Ability to work long hours, early mornings, evenings and weekends. Campaign season (Labor Day – Election Day) expected workload of 80 hours/week.
  • Ability to travel, mostly within the State of Georgia but occasionally out of state for conferences and trainings.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete urgent tasks in a timely manner.
  • The ability to learn new things and new skills.
  • The ability to work with people from all different backgrounds and political ideologies.
  • A preferred candidate will have some experience working in the Labor movement.
  • A preferred candidate would have the ability to present to and train adults across various skill levels on aspects of politics, campaigns and organizing.

This position reports to the President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia AFL-CIO.

Location: Atlanta, GA
