Bilingual (Spanish/English) Field Representative
Hudson Valley District

32BJ SEIU is a large and dynamic labor union, with 163,000 members in twelve states and Washington, DC. The Union is at the forefront of fighting for economic and social justice by engaging members in union contract campaigns as well as organizing, legislative and political campaigns.

The Hudson Valley District of 32BJ represents 4,000 property service workers in Westchester, Rockland and other counties in the Hudson Valley of New York. We represent office cleaners, apartment building workers, security officers and other service workers.

A 32BJ Field Representative’s role is to identify and develop worksite leaders and union stewards, resolve workplace issues and grievances, mobilize members to support the program and activities of the union, assist in organizing non-union workers and the union’s legislative and policy campaigns. Field Representatives know their assigned members and worksites, and work to expand their members’ involvement with 32BJ. Field Representatives identify those members who can assume leadership roles.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Member Representation & Contract Enforcement

  • Work with union stewards to educate and inform members of their rights and responsibilities under their Union contract
  • Addresses workplace issues raised by members. Works with the members and stewards to clearly identify a given issue, and recommends and facilitates a path to a solution. Determines whether the issue rises to the level of a grievance
  • Handles members’ grievances, from initiation through resolution. Understands the contract, including what constitutes a grievance, time limits, and processes of grievance handling. Tracks steps in the Union’s tracking system (CRM) and updates the member.

Member Engagement & Leadership Development

  • Educates members about the benefits of union membership and the importance of participation in politics
  • Works with member leaders to mobilize members to participate in contract, organizing and social justice campaigns
  • Identifies and recruits individual members who can take on leadership roles including union stewards, and works with member leaders to develop their skills

Employer Relations

  • Develops and maintains relationships with employers to effectively represent members and enforce the union contract
  • Effectively negotiates the resolution of grievances and workplace problems with management
  • Facilitates a relationship between the steward and front line supervisors/managers

Qualifications:

  • Clear verbal communication skills in English and Spanish
  • Experience in organizing, mobilization and involving people in action
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing demands
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and diverse beliefs
  • Valid driver’s license and a car in working order is required
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when needed
  • Strong computer skills and ability in adopting new technology tools
  • Experience as an active union member strongly preferred
  • Experience in organizing or union grievance handling and contract negotiations a plus
