  Program Coordinator

Job Title: Program Coordinator – Midwest/State Power Program
Grade: MGT D
Annual Pay Range: $93,203 - $104,840 /YR
Location: Washington, DC

Purpose:
The Program Coordinator is responsible for managing and carrying out key program areas in support of the Midwest/State Power Program and SEIU 2019-20 Turnaround Strategy, including coordinating loaned staff assigned to this project; planning trips and committee events and meetings; and conducting research and writing on future trends.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.)
Works with program leadership to develop and implement a strategic program involving multi-faceted campaigns, coordination with local unions, partners, and all other aspects of the program.

  • Manages key projects, including the planning of multi-state events and campaign activities.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with staff assigned from other departments to support the program.
  • Works with International and local union leaders to develop and implement key program elements.
  • Work in coordination with program leadership, evaluating and anticipating needs to support implementation.
  • Coordinates the work of staff assigned from other departments to support the program.
  • Tracks program progress and assists with the preparation of reports.
  • Assists the Executive Vice President in planning internal and external meetings, including support with all aspects of convening high-level working groups roundtables, and workshops.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned in support of the program

Contacts:

  • Must be able to represent the International Union with local leaders, members, staff, and outside organizations utilizing independent judgment and a high level of professionalism.
  • Interfaces with high level organizational and external contacts, including:
    • SEIU officers, division leadership, International senior staff, project and program managers, field, political, and organizing directors, local union officers and staff.
    • External: partners and allies, politicians, government officials, and vendors

Direction and Decision Making:
This position reports to an SEIU International Executive Vice President and the incumbent works independently.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and three years of experience in union program development and administration, or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of project management.
  • Knowledge of project team leadership.
  • Knowledge of unions or other advocacy organizations.
  • Knowledge of planning meetings and travel.
  • Ability to work with local union leaders and staff.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Ability to quickly learn content areas and converse effectively with experts
  • Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and set and meet deadlines, and ensure that staff team does the same.
  • Ability to use excellent political judgment.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to make formal presentations.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to conduct formal research, analyze data and make sound, logical conclusions.
  • Skill in writing and editing
  • Skill in the use of personal computer including Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting, but job may require work in the field or in other settings to perform the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays. Travel and long and extended hours required.
