Political/Community Organizer

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA


SEIU United Service Workers West is now hiring a Political/Community Organizer to build the political power and political empowerment for thousands of service workers in Northern California. This position is based out of the USWW Alameda office with the majority of the field work taking place in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Position would be an Organizer Level I.

SEIU United Service Workers West is a California state-wide union on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers and engaging in larger social issues such as immigration, racial justice, environmental justice and housing. United Service Workers West represents more than 40,000 janitors, security officers, stadium and arena, racetrack, residential, airport and other service workers in office and apartment buildings, supermarkets, and the hi-tech and entertainment industries. The union is also home to Justice for Janitors, Stand for Security and Poverty Doesn’t Fly, campaigns that have successfully improved the lives of thousands of low wage and immigrant workers throughout the country.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with Political Coordinator and staff to politically empower workers to build political power to positively impact their wages and benefits as well as larger social/political issues
  • Support our member Committee On Political Education (COPE);
  • Identify, recruit, and develop workers to play leadership roles on campaigns and in political program.
  • Outreach to elected leaders & community organizations to support campaigns
  • Attend community and political functions as a representative of the union
  • Coordinate union involvement in electoral and political fundraising work
  • Function as a field organizer in electoral campaigns
  • Assist with development of overall strategy for building, maintaining and mobilizing community and political support on a campaign or in an area program
  • Conduct community meetings and coordinate large community functions (e.g. community hearings)
  • Turnout political & community supporters to events and meet with elected leaders to advance campaign or union agenda.
  • May have the opportunity to serve as lead for small group of member organizers. Will be done with appropriate training and supervision.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-2 year prior labor, political or community organizing experience preferred
  • Strong social, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Patient in pressure situations and savvy with conflict management
  • Motivated self-starter who is able to learn and troubleshoot without heavy supervision
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and empowering working people to build political power and consciousness
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours
  • Driver’s license and reliable car
  • Computer skills a plus (Microsoft Word, Excel, & Access)
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus
