PROTEC17 is a nonprofit labor organization that represents more than 8,500 professional, technical, managerial and administrative public employees who serve the citizens of Washington and Oregon. The Executive Director of PROTEC17 should be a dynamic and respected leader in the labor community who is committed to continuing the organization’s successful growth and development. As the key management employee of PROTEC17, the Executive Director is responsible for strategic planning, overseeing the financial, legal and administrative responsibilities of the organization, and managing the day-to-day operations of PROTEC17.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Organizational Development

  • Lead and participate in PROTEC17’s operational planning to ensure alignment with organizational objectives
  • Provide strategic advice and direction to the Executive Board and Regional Executive Committee
  • Manage the legal and fiscal responsibilities and operation of the organization
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to expand and grow the organization

Financial Planning and Oversight

  • Responsible for fiscal management of the organization through the creation and implementation of an annual operating budget
  • Provide financial oversight of the organization on a day-to-day basis, and administer and monitor monthly expenditures
  • Maintain the organization in a positive financial position ensuring maximum but sustainable resource utilization

Stakeholder and Partnership Building

  • Maintain and develop strong relationships with public sector employers, elected officials, community leaders, and allied organizations
  • Represent PROTEC17 in all matters affecting the progress, interest, and welfare of the organization and its members
  • Promote the growth and engagement of the membership

Staff Management and Development

  • Serve as direct supervisor of all PROTEC17 staff employees with responsibility to hire, develop, discipline, and terminate staff
  • Mentor and inspire staff with clear communication of goals and strategic leadership
  • Guide and collaborate with staff to ensure thoughtful execution of organizational priorities
  • Foster a healthy workplace culture, a strong sense of camaraderie, and positive morale through employee engagement and continued professional development
  • Manage in accordance with union values

The final candidate will be subject to a background check, credit check, and past employment verification.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Demonstrated leadership and solid strategic aptitude, preferably with a background in nonprofit and/or labor union management
  • Strong financial management knowledge and budgeting ability
  • Labor relations experience to include journey level field staff background
  • Management experience to include setting performance goals and evaluating staff
  • Strong internal and external organizing experience, ability to support member-leader empowerment and training
  • Background in contract negotiations and legal impacts
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including those needed for public speaking
  • Exemplify sound judgment and strong ethical values
  • Broad labor movement awareness and ability to build relationships with elected officials and labor leaders
  • Ability to work well under pressure of multiple deadlines and priorities

Desirable Skills and Attributes

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, recruit, retain, and develop staff and foster a positive and collaborative work culture
  • Legal background, aptitude, and analysis capabilities, preferably with admission to either the Washington or Oregon Bar
  • Five years of supervisory experience over a minimum of five employees
  • Clear vision and ability to support staff and garner staff support to execute that vision
  • Commitment to professional growth and continuing education for self and staff
  • Dedicated advocate for union members who is committed to the success of the organization

Salary Range: $ 157,578 - $ 178,371 depending on experience.
