Political Coordinator

The NY NJ Regional Joint Board of Workers United is union dedicated to winning economic and racial justice through innovative and dynamic worker-led organizing and worksite campaigns.

We are a diverse and participatory union that is centered on our members’ needs for justice at work and in their communities. We build collective power to win dignity, good contracts, safe working conditions, and laws that benefit working families. We are committed to uplifting all working people in the New York New Jersey region.

Our current focus is building worker leadership among the mostly immigrant woman workforce across the New York nail salon industry. This growing campaign is centered around class, race, immigrant, and gender justice. We are building the first-ever nail salon worker union in the United States, changing the landscape of what’s possible to win with power.

We are seeking a Political Coordinator based in New York City, who will be responsible for the union’s political work in New York and New Jersey, primarily focused on but not limited to, the nail salon campaign. The Political Coordinator reports to the Organizing Director.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties:
This position includes a wide range of duties, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Mobilize, train, educate, and develop new member leaders and activists for legislative and electoral activity;
  • Plan and coordinate political field activities, lobby visits, phone banking and events for our public policy campaigns at the city, county, state and federal level;
  • Plan and supervise an electoral program for local, state and federal elections;
  • Drive political activity around the nail salon organizing campaign;
  • Support contract and organizing campaigns, including rallies, press events and owner activity;
  • Filing applicable NYS and NYC lobbying reports;
  • Be a registered lobbyist for Workers United;
  • Build the union’s capacity through grassroots political fundraising drives;
  • Oversee and carry out regional activity for federal legislative campaigns;
  • Coordinate the union’s work with local labor and community allies.

Principal Qualifications:

  • Experience in labor, political, or community organizing;
  • Ability to design and implement powerful and effective political programs;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legislative processes;
  • Experience working on electoral campaigns and managing field programs;
  • Experience as a registered lobbyist;
  • Excellent communications skills and experience building strong working professional relationships;
  • High level of judgement, leadership and commitment to the goals of the Union;
  • Ability to work independently with members and elected leaders

  • Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours including nights and weekends
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice
  • Experience with, and enthusiasm for, working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Commitment to center the leadership and voices of People of Color, women and immigrant workers
