DESCRIPTION:
The organizer for the Asian American Pacific Islander Civic Engagement (ACE Collaborative) Program will implement activities including door-to-door canvassing in communities with high Asian American Pacific Islander representation with the goal of ensuring AAPI leadership and voices are represented in social justice movements throughout northern Virginia. The AAPI Organizer may also be asked to conduct organizational outreach. The organizer will also work independently with the staff and volunteers towards increasing AAPI participation in the electoral process. The overall goals of Asian American Pacific Islander Organizing Project  is to advance a Pan-Asian narratives of Chinese, Filipinx, Indian, Korean, Sikh, and Vietnamese experiences and issues, and build political power in Virginia.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build independent political power for NVM and our partners through developing sustainable civic engagement programs, particularly in AAPI communities;
  • Engage in direct voter contact including knocking on targeted doors with the purpose of identifying leaders, potential issues and running issue campaigns;
  • Plan, host and/or take part in events in communities and on campuses to engage new volunteers and voters;
  • Provide materials for direct voter registration and volunteer engagement, i.e., turf, walk lists, scripts and voter registration materials;
  • Support NVM’s civic engagement initiatives and campaigns to win social, racial, economic, immigrant and environmental justice at the local, state and national levels, and hold elected officials accountable to those issues;
  • Coordinate with senior staff to support issue and electoral campaigns;
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Committed to New Virginia Majority’s mission;
  • At least 1-2 years organizing experience and/or willingness to learn;
  • Strong commitment to civic engagement, community organizing and building power of underrepresented Asian communities primarily through field work including canvassing, phonebanking, etc.;
  • Strong commitment to economic, racial, and gender justice;
  • Ability to work in non-English speaking communities. Ability to speak Asian languages is a plus;
  • Enjoys meeting and interacting with new people, and people of all background and identities; Works well in challenging environment both independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to prioritize and problem solve efficiently and independently;
  • Knowledge of electoral campaign strategy and tactics; Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines; able to develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy.
  • Self-motivated and works well both independently and on a team;
  • Takes initiative, has excellent communication and time management skills;
  • Ability to take direction and constructive feedback;
  • Has a valid Virginia driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Salary range is competitive from the low $30,000 to high $40,000’s, commensurate with experience, and comes with an excellent benefits package, including health, vision, dental, and stipends for phone and transportation.
