Political Director

Based in Oakland, CA


The Political Director plays a key role in expanding political and legislative power for working people throughout Alameda County. The Political Director increases our ability to elect and hold accountable worker-friendly officials. The Political Director reports to Executive Secretary-Treasurer, and works closely with Executive Committee members, affiliated unions and elected officials.

Campaigns

  • Direct all aspects of successful field programs, including volunteer recruitment, worksite campaigns, phone banks, local union letters/direct mail, precinct walks, mobilizations
  • Support Executive Secretary-Treasurer in developing, tracking campaign budgets
  • Other tasks as assigned

Infrastructure

  • Develop Political Action Network to engage affiliated unions and increase capacity
  • Represent Council at appropriate bodies & report to leadership, affiliates
  • Maintain positive working relationships with political allies
  • Staff PAC operations under executive direction
  • Establish and oversee the councils social media; Facebook, website, twitter accounts
  • Support annual UOYD awards dinner, Labor Day, and other events

Endorsement

  • Monitor political environment and seek opportunity
  • Manage endorsement process, including questionnaires, research, rank & file interviews
  • Develop training for union members and allies to run for office (successfully)
  • Maintain candidate and issue files

Qualifications

  • Experience in volunteer recruitment and coordination
  • Campaign management experience (polling, voter targeting, district analysis)
  • Ability to work effectively with leaders, volunteers, allies, elected officials and diverse populations
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Advanced computer skills including Excel, Access, Word, Internet
  • Spanish a plus

The Council requires a strong member mobilization program, savvy strategic skill, and excellent planning ability. This is not a 9-to-5 job; extensive nights and weekends are required. Compensation includes medical, dental, vision, pension.
